If you've seen the movie or trailers for "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire," chances are you've taken notice of the young black woman that plays the leading character in "Precious", Claireece "Precious" Jones. Her name is Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe.

Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe was born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York in 1983. She was raised in Harlem.

Sidibe's mother is R&B and Gospel singer Alice Tan Ridley.

In an interview Sidibe said at first she wasn't interested in auditioning for a movie when a friend told her about auditions for "Precious." At the time they were casting "Precious", Gabourey was a student studying psychology. She gave it a try and won the part out of 500 young women.

Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe got the role and stars as Claireece "Precious" Jones in the movie "Precious" adapted from the book, "Push" by Sapphire. The movie "Precious" is due out in theaters November 6, 2009. Claireece is sometimes seen alternately spelled as "Clareece."

In this movie Sidibe portrays an obese, abused 16-year-old enrolling in an alternative high school. She is raped and impregnated by her father twice. She uses fantasy to relieve some pressure from her difficult life. Other notable actresses in the movie are Monique, Mariah Carey and Paula Patton. The film on a Grand Jury Award from the Sundance Film Festival.

Gabourey has never studied theater, but she has participated in plays by Bronx's Lehman College's Theater department. She appeared in "Peter Pan", "The Wiz" and "The Vagina Monologues." She used her singing voice to perform two Elle Fitzgerald sons in the musical revue "Uptown Serenade." Gabourey's schooling has included these colleges in the New York City area: Borough of Manhattan Community College, The City College of New York and Mercy College.

Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe is continuing her acting career in the role of Latonya Williams in the movie "Yelling to the Sky." The movie, which is currently filming is about a disenfranchised family and a neighborhood with its own laws. The movie is due for release in 2010. She is also said to be filming "What Would You Do", a film by Tyler Perry set to be released in 2010 as well as negotiating for an appearance in Showtime's pilot for 'The C Word.'

According to Sidibe's Facebook page, she enjoys representing her hometown of Harlem, flirting with guys and making pancakes.
