Mini Fiction Contest Entry: A Month of Sundays

Tara Van Ness
She was fast and free and a little bit wild and everyone who ever met her fell in love with her spirit. She captivated women and men alike, and those who did not want to be her, simply wanted to be near her. She had raven hair with a slight curl and lovely doe-like brown eyes. She was sturdy and passionate and protective of those whom she loved. Yes, she spent the majority of her lazing about the manor with an air of superiority suitable of someone who had come from far less humble circumstances as she, but when there was cause, she would spring to action, eyes ablaze, willing to spit fire for her family.

It didn't matter that her rank was low or that no one knew the exact details of her past. It didn't matter that she must have had to perform some unspeakable acts to survive on the streets before she was graciously taken in by kind strangers. When she was discovered alone on a rainy night, her wits and ability to charm were the only two things that truly mattered. Those were the two things that stood between the life she knew and the kind of life she craved.

She did not speak, but she whimpered the first few nights in her new circumstances. She could not give them her name, and after a while, they simply began referring to her as "Sunday", the day she came to be in their lives. No one really wanted her, but who could leave a young girl on the streets with nowhere to go, nothing to eat, and no past to speak of? They tried to put her in the local facility for unwanted foundlings, but it was too harsh a place for such a pitiful being, so home with them she went.

At first, no one knew what to do with her. She was unable to be in polite company, with all the flitting about she did and the way she would speak out of turn. However, as the years wore on, Sunday became quite a worthy girl to have around. She soon charmed everyone who would come to meet her, and no one quite remembered how life was before she was part of it.

It has been said that no one truly knows love until they have loved a dog. Sunday, 'Domingo' as we called her, was our faithful and trusted companion for over 11 years before her passing in 2006. She will be forever missed.

That's true. Cats are in that same catagory. If we paid attention, we know they loved us back. Here's to Sunday "Domingo".
