Minnesota History Theatre: Hiding in the Open

A Must See for Any Theatre Lover

Ambrosia Jefferson
There are few things in Art more powerful than truth. Hiding in the open does a fantastic job of telling the core truth of a touching story. This play written by Kira Obolensky based on the memoirs of Sabina Zimering and directed by Hayley Finn tells the compelling story of Sabina's journey.

She had become a successful eye doctor in Minneapolis but kept a secret hidden inside and close to her heart. Sabina was an immigrant a Polish Jew who had come to age as the Nazis came to power. When their home country of Poland was invaded, the inventive Sabina and her sister survived the Holocaust in an amazing way. They disguised themselves as Catholics from Poland and lived in Germany. It was by no means an easy road for them to walk together and they survived by keeping quick wits and relying on one another. They stood strong together as the world crumbled around them.

This amazing play opens with the scene of suitcases every shape you can imagine. You are flashed through more images of suitcases left behind, piled high in the death camps and strewn askew. The remembrances of those who were taken to the death camps and never walked free again. The story is told from two perspectives and in chronological order. We follow the sisters from the Ghetto they were forced to live in in 1939. To their escape with the help of false papers and all of the jobs and terrors, they lived with from day to day.

Elise Langer brings across the heroic side of Sabina but manages to show a young woman and us that she is still vulnerable. You really cannot find a better theatric telling of such a story. It mingles the harsh truth with well-played theatrics. This is a must see play if you are in the Twin Cities Area.
