You start in Duluth and take yourself up to the Canadian border following the Superior National Forest for this one and the best thing there is no actual cost to take the tour as you will be taking the byway yourself. But there are costs along the way gas, hotel/motel if you plan on truly enjoying it. And anything else you wish. The drive itself is 154 miles, and about 3 hours. But along the way you will find shops, and other things along the way.
While you drive the North shore byway you will be seeing some of the most fantastic natural scenes you could hope for. Minnesota has something that no other place in the Midwestern states can offer you. There is a mountain backdrop, an inland sea and unspoiled wilderness. When you see the colors changing, and feel the calmness of the area you will never want to leave or at the very least return year after year.
If you're wishing to hike some trails and take in the colors more personally in our foliage tour you can. With over 200 miles of hiking trail on the superior hiking trail you will not run out of choices or opportunities to see the landscape and jeweled colors. If you prefer to see the colors from the water rent a boat on the lake itself. There really is a never ending way that you can enjoy the colors colors the fall foliage has to offer in Minnesota.
If you're looking for a fantastic treat for the kids swing by Two Harbors, they have an old train at the waterfront there and that will be something they won't soon forget. I know I ever forgot my first trip on the old steam engine. At the end of your fall foliage tour of the north show you can see the Grand Portage National Monument, which has a fur trading post stop. What a great history lesson for the kids! You also can't miss the gunflint trail in Grand Marias, and really just too many fantastic things to mention. You will never run out of things to do on this foliage tour. September and October are the peak months in Minnesota for the fall foliage, and we even have a hotline you can call for more information 1-800-657-3700. Hope to see you here!
