Minor Characters from the Sword of Truth Series

Anyone who has read The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind knows that the man can write. In fact, Goodkind managed to keep us entertained and intrigued through twelve books. While the saga of Lord Richard Rahl and the Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell captured our attention, Goodkind's supporting characters are written well enough to spawn their own series'.

First Wizard Zeddicus Zorander tops my list of favorites in The Sword of Truth series. Zedd is grandfather and mentor to the Lord Rahl, never lacking in adventures of his own. No one can help but to laugh out loud every time the ravenous wizard has any dialog in the books.

Gratch, a baby gar that Richard rescues is the most loveable beast ever written into a fantasy series. Even with his enourage of blood flies and blood covered fangs, Gratch makes the reader want to reach out and hug him, sort of.
While all of the Mord Sith deserve mention in this article, Cara gets the most page time in The Sword of Truth series. The constant companion and protector of the Lord Rahl, Cara is a surprisingly complex creature. I love her version of logic.

The profit Nathan Rahl reminds the reader of a mischievous and at times, petulant child. What makes Nathan so hysterical is that even though he is very childlike, the wizard is thousands of years old. While there are a few encounters with the Lord Rahl, Goodkind rewards Nathan with many supplots of his own that are essential to the story.

Shota, the Witch Woman is Terry Goodkind's character that everyone loves to hate. Always accompanied by her familiar Samuel, Shota honestly believes that she is acting with the Lord Rahl's best interest at heart, but her feelings for Richard cloud her judgement. When things don't go according to Shota's plans, she is not opposed to covering the Mother Confessor with snakes, or even to using the skin of a wizard to cover her throne.

While these five characters are my favorite minor players in The Sword of Truth series, Goodkind writes every character as important and interesting.
