Mint Condition Returns with Less-Than-Impressive E-Life

The Reviewer
Mint Condition was one of the biggest R&B groups of the '90s. It had chart-topping hits Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) and You Send Me Swinging. Now the group is back with its ninth album, E-Life. Has Mint Condition made the transition into the current, more producer-driven era of music?

The first single off of E-Life is Baby Boy, Baby Girl featuring R&B soul singer Anthony Hamilton. The song is a more current take on the neo-soul genre. The song is positive in nature however, the song just lacks in delivery. The song is ultimately forgettable in nature and not even Anthony Hamilton's verse can save it.

On Somethin' Mint Condition are joined by Phonte from Little Brother. The song is one of the better tracks on the album. On the song you can hear the sound of classic Mint Condition modernized. Phonte delivers a solid verse over the catchy track.

Ali Shaheed Muhammed from A Tribe Called Quest joins Mint Condition on Why Do We Try. The song is very awkward sounding with its minimalist synth hits over an almost acapella delivery. However when the song builds towards the chorus, the song is fairly solid.

Nothing Left To Say is classic Mint Condition. The song is timeless and very well put together. The song might help the group to crossover back into the mainstream limelight.

Just Can't Believe is a solid mid-tempo track. The song will definitely do well on adult-contemporary urban radio. The song is well performed and solid lyrically.

Right Here sounds vaguely similar to the Force MD's Tender Love. The song is a fairly solid track.

Back And Forth is more vintage Mint Condition however with more forcefulness than the group has ever displayed. There is an increased sense of urgency in this particular track.

Moan is exactly what you would picture it to be. A slow R&B ballad dedicated to the female audience.

Goldigger is a more modern R&B song. Mint Condition are still solid vocalists however this more current subject matter just fails to mesh completely with the group.

E-Life is a mixed bag. Mint Condition is best served using the style that was successful for it in the '90s. However, when the group tries to modernize the sound, it just falls in the middle of the pack. E-Life gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Mint Condition make sure you pick up E-Life when it is available in stores in June.

I COULD NOT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON THE NEW "MINT CONDITION" E-LIFE. AND YES I LOVED THE LYRICS AND MUSIC TO "NOTHING LEFT TO SAY". THE MUSIC IS NEW AND DIFFERENT. AS FOR YOUR COMMENTS ON LESS THAN IMPRESSIVE....WHAT HAVE "YOU" EVER CREATED? WHAT CD'S ALBUMS, BOOKS, ANYTHING DO YOU HAVE OUT? PEOPLE SEEM TO FORGET HOW HARD IT IS TO CREATE AT ALL LET ALONE BE LABELED AS "PRODUCER DRIVEN" MUSIC. IF YOU ARE A TRUE FAN, WHICH I AM, THEN YOU CAN APPRECIATE THE UNIQUE SOUND THEY HAVE ALWAYS PRODUCED. AS FAR AS "USE TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS" COMMENT, THEY STILL ARE. IT'S JUST THAT SO MANY OTHER GROUPS NEED AND SHOULD BE HEARD AS WELL. THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT CD FROM MINT CONDITION PEOPLE FORGET WHAT THE NEGATIVE HYPE HAS TO SAY.

You may not be impressed with the music but I am equally unimpressed with your review. Instead of reviewing the album as a whole you make simple lackluster commentaries about each song. Mint Condiiton is one of the most solid music groups ever. Period. They are musicians who are passionate about their craft and it is evidenced in their songs. What is great about E-Life is the evolution of the music and the group. Why would you suggest someone go back to an old style? You obviously aren't in tune to what these brothers do. Its not about the current style that leads them. They are musicians - artists who create and what they've done on this album is fantastic. Before you review anymore music take the suggestion from MCFan and go listen to some music from the 70's and 80's and maybe you'll get the picture.

Your title is misleading. You give the cd a 7.5 out of 10, but you say its less than impressive? Not sure what you're basing that on. From what I've heard of a few of the songs on E-Life (on their myspace web page), it seems they have a fine album coming up on May 6. Yeah, most artists' cds have a few songs that aren't that great, and maybe "Baby Boy, Baby Girl" wasn't the best choice for the first single, but it seems they have enough great songs on the cd to make a great album. Funny, you seem to think Alicia Keys' current album is great (NOT from what I've heard so far). You probably haven't been exposed to really good music, try to listen to a lot of quality r&b/soul music from the 70s to like 2001, then you might be able to make better music reviews.
