Miriam Blackwell

The Gate to Glendale

Part One

Miriam Blackwell always has a bit of something in her mind that will get her to trouble. As a tall girl with black long hair and a thick rim of glasses hanging on her almost crooked nose, she is and has never been considered as one of the famous beautiful girls in Glendale Junior High School, nor as someone who is good at sports, music, or anything in particular.

She has just been known as, well, Miriam Blackwell, an outspoken girl with troublemaker attitude.

Her family, which consists of her uncle George and her parrots Palo, had just moved to Glendale from Scotland a few months ago, and they live in a small house right before the gate to the Van Moisenn villa, the place where the wealthiest of Glendale spend their summer holiday.

Every morning before going to school, Miriam would meet her only best friend in Glendale, Claire Robinson, a red curly haired girl with sparkly blue eyes.
Claire's mother owns a family bakery that has been descended to her from her great great and great grandmother.

Although the store itself has been made available through every generation of Robinson family, the gift of baking as it turns out has run short on Mrs. Robinson.
Everyday Claire will share Miriam various, and sometimes the almost absurd combination flavor of muffins from the fresh oven of her mom's chaotic kitchen.

This morning, it's coffee and coconut.

"Specially made for you, my sweet Miriam!" Mrs. Robinson cheerfully greets the gloomy girl with a wide smile and a bag of brownish muffins with white spots.

"You are my sole inspiration in creating this piece. A little dark, but with twinkling white feathers here and there!"

"Are these chopped white mushrooms?" Miriam sneers, as she sniffs the muffin to make sure it won't get her sick.

Claire laughs, "That's coconut, silly girl!" She leans towards Miriam as she quickly whispers, "Just get a bite and throw it away, it's worse than yesterday's chilli powder muffin!"

Miriam almost popped her eyes but she turns to Mrs. Robinson with a polite smile, "I'm sure I'll survive this time, Mrs. Robinson... As I've always had with your bizarre culinary-"

Smelling trouble is in the air, Claire snapped, "Bye, Mom! We're off to school!" and off they go running towards the hill with Mrs. Robinson shaking her head, "What an odd couple of best friends!"

Glendale, truly is a beautiful little town, especially during autumn. With colorful tulips and yellowing pine trees spreading over the town, the scenery looks like a painting. The golden sun shining on the twinkling blue water in Lake Mellon, and the white swans dancing with the music of the wind, all framed the beauty of the place.

Glendale High School is located right after Lake Mellon, in the feet of Mountain Rainer.

As the two girls run through the school gates and find their usual spot to sit, the class begins.

"G'Morning my gorgeous ladies in a gorgeous morning at a gorgeous town of Glendale!", the perky Ms. Livingstone stormed in the classroom with a pile of books on Geography. Her tall and skinny figure swayed from side to side as she piles the books neatly on the sturdy table.

Miriam rolled her eyes, "Why does she always have to use the word 'gorgeous in a sentence more than once?"

Bryan McCallister, a short heavy boy that sat right in front of Miriam sneered at her and said, "To remind you that you're not."

Miriam gave him a punch and in split seconds Claire threw her pencil at him.
