Misconceptions of Prop 8

No on 8!

Pamala L. Ott
The Yes on 8 team would like you to believe that if this isn't passed that we're allowing government into marriage and you know they're all about not having government in marriage. They fail to realize though that what they're doing is getting government involved in marriage where now it isn't.

I know it's confusing but what was done earlier this year was the Supreme Court said that the government has no right to say who can and can not get married because the Constitution makes no determination on that. So basically what the Supreme Court did was remove the government from marriage. Now the Yes on Prop 8 people want them back in it.

The thing about Prop 8 is that even if it's passed it will be overturned in a year or so again by the Supreme Court. And Prop 8 isn't as easy as they'd like to make it out to be. An amendment to our Constitution involves more than us voting and I'm willing to bet will never happen, the Supreme Court would never allow it.

People should look at it like this, if marriage was truly a religious institution it shouldn't involve the government at all. So the Yes on 8 people are fighting the wrong battle. The battle should be that marriage should be only dictated by the Churches while the rest of the sinning folk who are apparently going to hell can get their civil unions and government benefits. Yes married people don't get government benefits, they need to get civil unions as well because the government won't be involved in marriage at all..

The state constitution says there can't be a state religion and by making laws based on one religious belief (because I've yet to hear any non-religious reasons to make it illegal) the state is making it known that Christianity/Judaism is the religions in which they go by. It's state sanctioned religion. That's unconstitutional.

Want to preserve the sanctity of marriage? We need to start then with our own marriages. Why is the divorce rate so high? Homesexuals didn't cause that. Why are divorces allowed at all? Why are some parts of the Bible followed to a T while others are completely ignored?

Religion is a private matter, not to be forced on others. Current organized religion makes it hard for non-believers because it's hard to see the hate that is expressed towards homosexuals especially if you have a homosexual family member. How can anyone be part of a religion that has no problem discriminating against people?

With one more week to go people should realize that religion is best left to be a private matter, and like it or not no one deserves to be treated like a second class citizen because of who they love. And if it's really about the religious context of the word marriage then maybe a different battle needs to be fought. One to remove marriage from government control at all.

Well said. There were 'yes on 8' demonstrators in my neighborhood a few days ago with signs that said "Prop 8 = Parental Rights" it was frustrating to see how they're twisting the issue into something it's not.
