Miss California Carrie Prejean Should Just Shut Up and Sit Down

Miss California State Director Shanna Moakler Wants Prejean to Stop Doing Talk Shows and Talk to Perez Hilton or Equality California

Saul Relative
Miss California Carrie Prejean needs to just be quiet -- or so thinks Miss California State Director, Shanna Moakler. Moakler, who has been criticized for abstaining from the war of words between 2009 Miss USA judge Perez Hilton and Miss California Carrie Prejean that has raged since Sunday's Miss USA Pageant, wants Prejean to stay away from the media and make amends with the gay community either through Perez Hilton or through Equality California, a pro gay rights organization.

Shanna Moakler stated that she was surprised that Carrie Prejean "went down that road and answered the question the way she did." She said she knew that Prejean had strong religious beliefs. Moakler went on to say that she thinks it is necessary that Prejean stop the talk show circuit and sit down with Hilton or Equality California because of "openly gay sponsors who supported her and were not aware of her opinions on their lives and are now deeply hurt."

Carrie Prejean and Perez Hilton have been on numerous shows since the pageant airing their views. Carrie Prejean said she believes her answer that she opposed same-sex marriage cost her the crown. Perez Hilton, who is openly gay, maintains she lost her crown due to the inarticulateness of her answer and that her answer wasn't factual. Her opinion was hers but irrelevant.

But Hilton was not amused. He later called Miss California a "dumb b----" on his video blog.

"She's not apologizing and I'm not either," Perez Hilton told Fox News, but he said he would like to sit down and talk with her (or, if she would prefer, if not him, Hilton suggests Equality California).

Since the pageant anti-gay pundits and some conservative groups have taken Carrie Prejean as their public speaker. Religious groups that oppose same-sex marriage have done the same. Some have rode the fence, stating she had a right to say what she did, believe the way she does, and Perez Hilton has the same right with his question and the power to vote the way he wished. And then there are those who have demonized Miss California as an anti-gay bigot, a "dumb bitch," or a very unprepared and/or non-diplomatic exclusionist that simply deserved to lose the pageant.

Regardless of ideological view, Shanna Moakler just wants Carrie Prejean to stop talking "about how great it is she used the First Amendment and her First Right, and really sit down with these people that she's hurt."

It is not yet clear if Miss California is willing to do that. She has gained extensive publicity over the controversy. She has become far more famous than what's-her-name, the winner of the 2009 Miss USA Pageant, who has remained silent about the entire affair as well.

Prejean says that she was being tested by god. Her answer was heartfelt. It was how she was raised. She believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

And that is her right. She can believe whatever she likes. She can also talk about it. These being her rights does not make her a hero., nor do they make her a villain. It is simply her opinion. Her answer just makes her honest.

Having put her personal beliefs on public display on every show that she could, Carrie Prejean might not want to mend any fences with the gay community or the pro same-sex marriage supporters. She might just see it as a betrayal of herself and her beliefs. Prejean would do better to have a public contest of wills with the California State Director and force them to strip her of her crown or leave her alone.

Either way, she gets more publicity, which furthers her career (which is exactly what she wants, according to some of her detractors).

Shanna Moakler might want Miss California Carrie Prejean to shut up, she might hope Prejean will quiet down, but given Prejean's statements of standing for her beliefs, it is doubtful if that will occur. But the bottom line is: Regardless of how one feels about Carrie Prejean's answer about same-sex marriage, whether one agrees or disagrees with it, she had the right to say it and has the right to go on talk shows and justify it.

And public statements that look like rebukes or censorship only fan the flames of polarization. One might wish Carrie Prejean to be quiet, but that was a sentiment that Shanna Moakler might should have considered in quiet self-counsel.

(cont.) Your thin attacks on my intelligence and your basing your "facts" on the "facts" of the bible ("facts are facts," you keep saying, which they are not, by the way, just your take on a few written words) does absolutely nothing for your weak and unsubstantiated arguments.

No, Mike, what is apparent is what I believe is not going to line up with what you want me to believe. That's the problem with authoritarian religions. The bible was written by men. It is not factual and can only be substantiated in just a few places (a few place names, battles, kings -- the rest is myth and fable). And Christianity is a religion. Just because you don't define it as such matters not one iota. And it's apparent you're not a bible scholar. And you apparently haven't learned enough about anything because you claim to know what the truth is when there are billions of people still searching for the "truth" and basing whatever they find on faith, not facts. "Facts are facts" works only for those willing to look at what is factual and empirical, not faith-based and intepretive. Scripture isn't fact. And don't worry about your miscue. I'll forgive you. I'll also forgive all your other asinine comments as well (Christianity is not a religion, for example). Your thin

OK saul. Apparently nothing anyone says or comments is ever going to line up with what you believe. You make comments as if you know what you are talking about when it comes to the scriptures and or history. Have you even read the bible?? Where do you get your so called facts?? Everything I have commented on is scriptural. I will say I was wrong about Jesus saying that in Leviticus. I was reading something from a web site and I failed to pick up my Bible and confirm it. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!. Thank You for helping me learn my scriptures better and to make sure I have proper responses for People like you. Regardless of my mis-cue, the scripture and what it says is in there and facts are facts. And just so I can clear up my RELIGION as you say. lol...Christianity is NOT a religion. I am not a bible scholar and have never claimed to be. But I learned enough to know what the truth is. As you keep making opinionated comments with words that continue to make you look not as smart a

I have to agree with you on that, Kathryn. He didn't have to call her names and attack her afterward. As I stated, if he chose to say anything at all, he could have been far more decorous. Prejean may have left it all alone afterward, but, given some of her statements and her appearing at dozens of venues, I doubt it. She's definitely an opportunist. Don't fault her for that; most people are... I think she's secretly after Megan Kelly's job...

  • Kathryn E. Darden5/13/2009

It was a no-win, politically divisive, emotionally-charged question. Perez Hilton is the one who forced the issue, not Carrie Prejean.

  • saul relative5/8/2009

(cont.) afterward, but his question was not a trap. It was Carrie Prejean's contest to win or lose. She lost. At the time of the contest, Americans only had a "choice" of how they chose to marry in three states, not the United States. Of course, calling heterosexual, traditional marriage "opposite" didn't help her, either. She helped blow things out of proportion afterward, choosing to look at the entire thing as an attack on her marriage stance, which was only part of it...

This was not a trap-the-dumb-blonde question, nor was it a gotcha moment for Perez Hilton, regardless of his lifestyle choice, Sheryl. Hilton came up with the question and got it okayed through the Miss USA Pageant people. It was a fair question. She just blew the answer all to hell. Her ignorance of the issue and the ham-handed way she answered is why she lost. Since then, the conservative and religious right have taken her up as some dumped-on martyr. She isn't. She's just a beauty queen that lost. She said she lost because of that question. She's probably right, but not for her stance (although that undoubtedly cost her points with Hilton as well). She lost because of her asinine answer. She and others have chose to ignore her ignorant answer (the beginning, not the stance on same-sex marriage) and fixate on the idea that everyone was attacking Miss California for her anti-same-sex marriage stance. Some were. Some were not. Hilton could have been a little more decorous

Saul - where are all your real AC friends?! All you've got are these anonymous talkers. I think you put a great angle on this article. I have to agree with one remark by ES165 - why was Hilton picked to judge? If you want someone gay who's a maven about women and how they should look, what about gentlemanly Tim Gunn of Project Runway? Hilton is the one who should be facing the grilling - like about why he decided to trap this one contestant with this question. And about his intolerance afterward by throwing swear words at her.

Of course, Mike. Forgive the poor Jews for having a religion thousands of years older than Christianity, which is an offshoot of Judaism by the way, and not one thing attributed to Jesus was actually written by someone who actually was with him when it was said. Jesus wrote none of the stuff attributed to him. Imagine that. There's truth for you. And by the way, Jesus never said a thing in Leviticus. He wasn't even born when that ancient tome was written. So pray all you want, Mike, and when god answers, be sure and let me know, o Condescending One...

  • Mike5/5/2009

Truth is Truth Saul. There is ONLY ONE!! and it's called the Holy Bible. Truth is a matter of perspective??? What the heck is that??? This nation was blessed by God (big "G" by the way) because of it's foundation and belief in Him. It's all throughout history. I'm no historian, not by a long shot. But fact is fact. and it's not MY opinion. People think just because I typed it, it's my opinion. Get real, open your eyes to the truth and you'll be a whole lot better off. Listen.. Jesus says in Leviticus 18:22 " You shall not lie with a male as with a women. It is an abomination" That's pretty clear my friend. And I do pray for lost people all the time saul. It's what we as Christians do. And as a Christian, I will now pray for you. God Bless You
