Miss California vs. Perez Hilton (Video Links) on Same Sex Marriage on Miss USA Pageant

Carrie Prejean, Miss California, May Have Lost the Miss USA Crown Due to Her Views on Same Sex Marriage

One of the the Miss USA pageant contestants stirred up a little controversy last night. Miss California, Carrie Prejean, was asked her views on same sex marriage by Perez Hilton. Perez said in his question: "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not?"

Carrie Prejean's reply? "In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman." Miss California's answered seemed to outrage Perez Hilton and he posted a video blog venting his frustrations. You can see the video of Carrie Prejean's response to the question and Perez Hilton's video blog about here on posted on ABC here. Perez Hilton was one of the Miss USA judges, and his vote may have indeed cost Miss California from winning the crown. Carrie Prejean seems to realize that her answer cost her the Miss USA crown. She told Billy Bush, "I stated an opinion that was true to myself."

Keith Lewis the executive director of Miss California gave a written statement to Perez Hilton expressing his disappointment in Carrie Prejean's response to the gay marriage question. You can read his statement here.

Should Perez Hilton have ever been a judge on Miss USA?

Perez Hilton is known for having a very strong opinion on things. I question if having him as a judge was ever a good idea. I agree with gay marriage rights, but I also believe in everyone having their own opinions. Carrie Prejean is entitled to her own thoughts on gay marriage. Her response was not disrespectful in any way. If Miss California had something negative about gay and lesbians I could understand the controversy. Carrie was not forcing her opinions on others. She was asked a question and seemed to give her honest response. When Perez Hilton was chosen as a judge, I cannot imagine the Miss Universe organization, in charge of the Miss USA pageant, did not know something like this may happen. Choosing Perez Hilton as a judge helped with viewership, but at what cost? I do not believe it is fair to discriminate against someone who doesn't share our beliefs. I do not believe a question on same sex marriage was appropriate for the Miss USA pageant.

The Miss USA crown went to Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton. You can view pictures of the new Miss USA, Kristen Dalton here. If you would like to view more photos of Miss California, Carrie Prejean here

This is a very sensible take. I guess Perez Hilton worked his way into the mainstream w/ this gig and his recent appearance on The Apprentice, but I don't think he was a good choice for judge. It seems inappropriate for him to be blogging about this situation in this way. And yes, based on current legislation, tons of people must agree w/ Carrie Prejean. I think it's a moot point b/c regardless of her beliefs, to which she is entitled, her answer was ludicrous and poorly phrased. I thought that was what she was being judged on.

It was a very honest answer though, excellent reporting!

Why did Hilton ask the question if he didn't want an honest answer? Why was the apology made to Hilton and not Miss California? If only four states have legalized it she must not be the only one who feels that way. Glad she was honest.

It was good to hear Miss California give a honest answer to the same sex marriage question.
