Miss Controversial Carrie Prejean: Dumb or Just Plain Honest?
Did What Miss California Carrie Prejean Say Cost Her the Miss USA Crown?
It's been just a few days since the 2009 Miss USA Pageant but the controversy surrounding the answer given to Perez Hilton's question about the legalization of gay marriage keeps steamrolling along. Miss California Carrie Prejean and Hilton both have been on dozens of shows presenting their take on the answer, their take on Hilton's response to the answer, the public response to Carrie Prejean's answer, the public response to Perez Hilton's question and his response to Miss California's answer, and the First Amendment.
To refresh, Perez Hilton said: "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?"
To which Miss California Carrie Prejean replied: "I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there but that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be between a man and a woman."
First of all, Carrie Prejean lost the Miss USA Pageant to Miss North Carolina. She says standing up for her beliefs and speaking her mind cost her the crown. She told Fox News that god was testing her faith. When she found out that Perez Hilton later called her a "c***", she condescendingly said she'd pray for him.
Perez Hilton told Larry King that the question was vetted beforehand. He said Miss California lost the pageant because of how she phrased her answer, how inarticulately it was couched.
To be clear: There was absolutely nothing wrong with the question. Some are saying that the question should have never been posed. Not true. Also to be cleared up: There was absolutely nothing wrong with the answer. An opinion was asked. An opinion was given.
Miss California lost the 2009 Miss USA crown because of her ineloquence. She stumbled over her wording. She said "opposite marriage", which was a nervous mistake, as was "my country" (which made it sound as if Perez Hilton lived in someone else's country). She also said "I think I believe" which gives the impression that she does not really know what she believes. And Carrie Prejean said that she lived in a country where they can choose between same-sex marriage and "opposite marriage," which is not true. First of all, no one chooses between a same-sex marriage and a straight marriage (assuming that is what Miss California was stumbling around). You're either homosexual and want to marry another homosexual (or not), or you're straight and wish to marry someone of the opposite gender (or not). Miss California first presupposes that homosexuality is a choice. Her answer also suggests that heterosexuality is as well. And as for having the opportunity to enter into a same-sex marriage, that can only happen in three states, not in "my country," our country, or most of the country. Not even in Miss California's home state. Heterosexual partners can choose whether or not to get married in every state and commonwealth of the union.
In summation: A poor, not well thought out response to a question that should have been easily answered.
But kudos to Miss California for standing up for her beliefs, regardless of how inarticulately expressed. She has a right to them, as does every American.
But did her opinion cost her the 2009 Miss America crown? Possibly. Her answer was a controversial bombshell, poorly phrased or not. It may have made the judges uncomfortable. It is a known fact that it angered at least one judge. And considering that Miss California was the clear frontrunner after the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, it would be safe to say that her opinion may have cost her the crown.
And it may not have...
The Miss USA contestants are trained professionals, skilled in the art of public speaking. It is also possible that the absolute lack of elegance in phrasing, the clumsiness in articulation, and the overall ineloquence of the answer cost Miss California the crown.
But it made the first loser famous. And it will no doubt land her an anchoring position at Fox News.
Quick. Again: Who won the 2009 Miss USA Pageant?
That's right. No matter how you look at her, her answer, or the subsequent controversy, Miss California Carrie Prejean walked away the winner Sunday evening...
******
For those who would rather not google the answer: The winner of the 2009 Miss USA Pageant was Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton. As noted, Carrie Prejean was first runner-up.

Post a CommentI'm proud of Carrie...Adam and Eve; not Adam and Steve...
Two men can't reproduce a child. (naturally)
I agree those on this blog...sexual orientation is a choice...Sex is Sex...you choose who you have sex with...I'm a male and sex with another male isn't right...period. If there are purest on this blog...If I'm a married male, sex with any one other than my wife (male or female) is not right either...Moral terpitude...i.e. the silent majority is still the majority...majority deems it unacceptable...both examples mentioned above.
Love the person and not the act. Family members that are "fruit cakes" know they're wrong/out of order...We must love them and not their behavior.
Jerms, other than being stupid and uneducated, why would you think that sexual orientation is a choice? If you actually have to choose to like women, that likely means that you're a closet homosexual. I'm not saying that to insult you (though I don't have a problem insulting you), but rather as a statement of probable fact.
It's amazing that after hundreds of years of racism, we're finally starting to get past it, and then ignorant bigots immediately find something else to discriminate against people for.
Her conceited (my God) inarticulate, in accurate answer should have placed her last at that point. And of course sexual orientation isn't a choice, one can remain celebate but one cannot choose who one is attracted to.
Sexual attraction is not a choice, jerms. Choosing who you have sex with is not the same as sexual attraction.
The writer of this article was totally inacurate about homosexuality...When it comes to sexual relationships it's a choice. If your a human being you chose whether you want to be homosexual, heterosexual, bi-sexual, it doesn't matter it's all a choice...even though some choices are not the best choice.
the perversion will end. Many other depravities will enter our country and will ultimately destroy it. For us to continue to be a free nation we as a people must serve the God of this land and live clean moral lives. There never was a nation that continued in freedom or continued period that lost all moral restraint.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR BRAIN? Homosexuality is Pathology. It is not normal and should not be encouraged. Individuals suffering with this mental disease should be helped and set on the road to recovery. Most homosexuals choose to be homosexual or had some bad experience in life which has swayed them that way. The list of reasons people become gay could go on and on but almost never is it because they were born with this mental disease. There are many self-proclaimed homo's who all of the sudden start dating the opposite sex. Take Ellen Degenerate(DeGeneres) old girlfriend who left her and just started dating men...hmmm...but I thought they didn't choose according to yo
It is unbelievable the bias and contempt the media and the people like you have for those who try and uphold morals, principles and scruples this country was founded on and has been kept strong by those who maintain them. Why don't we see articles against homosexuality and the negative effects it has on those individuals suffering with it on CNN? Why is that people like you only get to write article that are for homos? That's denying me my civil rights by not giving me a voice on the same playing field. All we see the mainstream media do is demonize people who stick of for what's right, and who are fighting decadence, by saying they are denying people their rights. Where does it say in the constitution we have the right to spread whatever perversion we want? The constitution was created by moral, Christian men and was meant for a moral, clean living people. Mark my words. If we allow homosexuals to marry that will be enough to bring down the freedom of this nation but that's not where
You do chose to be gay. There is absolutely no scientific proof that people are born gay. Most likely is that they were molested or raped or had a horrible upbringing. To report that you don't choose to be gay is absolute irresponsible journalism and very destructive to this country. What is wrong with your sick brains? This country is going to hell when homosexuality is defended and morality is discouraged. Open your eyes, it is a pathological anomaly. These people have a mental decease and it should be classified as such. Saul I hope you don't have any children or never will. It's bad enough you're allowed to spread your perversion and gay propaganda to adults through the media but it is another thing if you brainwash children to support degeneracy and debauchery. May God have mercy on your soul and all the other foul supports of such perversion and abnormalities
Perez Hilton said hateful things and MISS USA Contest is silent. I will not watch future MISS USA contests and will not watch NBC.
