Missed You at the Emmy's

Won’t the Stars Come Out to Play?

Melissa R. Mendelson
Applause is the thunder of talent rising and taking the stage one step at a time, and beauty is shining in the tears of eyes, rose petals of love. Gold glitters not in the award but in respect and legacy, and tonight would be the hearth of memories. Loss is the sad song of melody as the past ignites of those gone but never to be forgotten, and promise is the sweet embrace of youth breaking ground with first Emmy nominations and victories. And queen is the silver-haired hostess, whose touch of Comedy lifts us up and carries us across the sea of brilliance, but some stars would not shine tonight. And we missed you at the Emmy's.

3. Take me to your leader.

Oh, how I missed the days of Invaders from Mars, Communion, Enemy Mine, and even the first two Alien movies. Movies such as Skyline, Splice, and Signs could not hold a candle to the classics, if their life depended on it, but at least, Super 8 made me nostalgic, hoping for more close encounters of another kind. But one, two, three. Television has struck out with failures such as Invasion, V, and The Event, and we turn bitter to the idea of another show with another invasion. But the heart of humanity lies in the threshold of curiosity, crossing into dark territory, and touching the end of legacy, and we fall deep into Falling Skies, a show captivating all that we are and all that we struggle to keep alive. Yes, it is another television show with another alien invasion, but unlike its predecessors, it does not disappoint. The war wages on, pulling us forward, breathless with anticipation, and spellbound by the talent of cast and crew, and we missed you at the Emmy's last night.

2. All the Beautiful Men, Where do they all come from?

I remember the awards show, where Halle Berry made two extraordinary men bare it all. Well, almost all. That would be Hugh Jackman and John Travolta, but there are more starfish in the sea, men with beautiful eyes, entrancing smiles, chemistry and charisma, and bodies sculpted like art of clay. But is that why we watch them, or is it more skin deep? Controversy is the beacon to their soul, men like Neal Caffrey in White Collar or Michael Westen in Burn Notice, and the actors are bold and graceful, crafting a character work of art. With time comes definition and wisdom, wisdom found in Men of a Certain Age, and the rough wings of characters never to be forgotten take flight, slicing their way into legacy, House and Dexter. The wars are waging, True Blood is flowing, and the Game of Thrones now has king to the Emmy's. But there were still so many that we missed tonight.

1. Shine Your Fire Forever Upon Me

The streets were quiet; ghosts walking into forever. Ash falls like gentle rain, bitter memories of loss, revenge, lust, and destruction. Flames are the kindle of heart, love, friendship, family, and brotherhood, and the sky ignites, carrying a hero to heaven. Now, the rain falls across the grave, chased by memories of up times and down, but memories are laced with a sweet scent of chocolate for all that we are, all that we try to be, we are because we are better for knowing them. We laughed, we cried, we lived as they breathed, as they fought, and as they survived, and now we are at a loss without them for they fade to black, a series end. And the ghosts walk into forever, forever haunting us with the lives of 62 Truck and Tommy Gavin, whose fire will always shine down upon a television show called Rescue Me, and its heart and soul will always be deeply missed especially at the Emmy's.
