Missing Out on Free Money

Daniel Rein
Have you ever noticed how the United State's capitalist economy lends itself to pure greed and stupidity. The other day I was surfing the web and it occurred to me how dumb some people are. It isn't just a select few people; it's a majority of Americans. Take for instance your average game show.

People will turn down thousands of dollars in prize money and risk it all in an attempt to get to the prize pool. The contestants are usually below the poverty line and in need of the money.

Instead of taking the $25,000 that they need to pay for rent and to find a job, they risk it all for the shot at glory, fame and for 1 million dollars that in all likelihood, they will never reach. At the end of the night, they walk away with nothing but a story to tell and a shoulder to cry on.

This also reminds me of the mega millions lotto commercial. A man is by his window in an apartment building looking outside and money is falling from the sky. His wife tells him that they should go get the money but instead the husband ridiculously says that they should wait until several more million dollars fall from the sky.

Of course, a mass amount of people scream "money" and fight each other to grab all of the money while the man stands watching them. The commercial is hilarious but sad at the same time. Many Americans act this way. They turn down money that is staring right at them .

Another great example is this writing website I was looking at called makemoremoney.com. The website is similar to Associated Content and gives people money.

Yet people are still turning down high offers because they think that their article is worth more money.

In the end, they reject the amount for the article and once they realize that they will not be receiving a higher bid elsewhere, it is too late and the website has rejected their article.

So what is the lesson to be learned from a simple lottery commercial about the game of life? If you see money and are offered money and there are no strings attached, don't be a fool- take the money.
