Mississippi State Fans Embarrass Themselves, Alums, and Team in Loss to Kentucky

Mississippi State Basketball Fans Turned into Immature Criminals on Tuesday Night

Ryan Christopher DeVault
Mississippi State didn't just lose to Kentucky on Tuesday, they embarrassed themselves, they embarrassed their team, and they embarrassed their fellow alums. After pushing one of the best teams in the country to overtime, Mississippi State fans became upset with calls officials were making, and began throwing debris on the court. This included several water bottles, one of which was full and exploded on impact with the court. The potential existed that someone could have been seriously hurt, but Mississippi State fans didn't care, as they wanted the world to know that they were too immature to be allowed into the building.

To be clear, not every fan at Mississippi State basketball games is involved in the vulgar chants shouted from the student section, and not every fan condones what took place on Tuesday night. But the actions of these fans leading up to the game, during the game, and after the game should make every decent human being at that University want to see action taken against these fans. It started with racial epithets being sent by text message to one of Kentucky's star players, it continued with vulgar chants during the game, and it ended with debris thrown on to the court. Now instead of people talking about how MSU pushed Kentucky to the brink, all anyone will remember is how classless so many MSU fans were on Tuesday night.

The only action that can be taken here is to play the next home game in front of an empty stadium. The people who threw debris on the court need to be expelled and punished to the fullest extent of the law, and those fellow students that protected them by not turning them in deserve the same punishments. The racist actions taken by several people at the University goes so far over the line that it is ridiculous, and until the people that threw the debris and made those comments come forward, the fans should be locked out of that arena.

The classless actions should not be condoned at all, by anyone, and the punishment needs to be severe when it comes to the safety of the visiting teams. Fans that weren't involved in this criminal behavior should be campaigning for the same thing. Something has to be done immediately, well before someone gets hurt or attacked from the MSU fans making threats.

This is not the first time MSU has acted up. In 1990, MSU vs. USM (a Brett Favre game) MSU players came out to the file and gave the finger & and grabbed their cocks gestering to USM fans

You must be a Ole Miss fan. Because you sure think you know everything, or some idiot that was not even at the game. If I had to bet you probably did not even watch it.

"well before someone gets hurt or attacked from the MSU fans making threats." and "unruly and criminal fans" You make it sound like there was a riot. In an attempt to break the stereotypes, yes it was deplorable, but it was three bottles, .02% of the people there. It's safe to say that .02% of any population could be that stupid. As far as the texts, that was terrible as well. (Those people will hopefully be suspended from the University.) Is there still racism in MS? Yes, but is there still racism everywhere? Of course. Do some people in MS fit the stereotypical southerner? Yes. Do most of us? No. Believe it or not there are a lot of well educated individuals in MS. The only reason this is being blown so totally out of proportion is because this happened in MS. You're resorting to sensationalism to get page views; are you sure you're a journalist or just another random blogger? Ryan, your article resorted to personal attacks, why shouldn't we commenters?

The individuals who sent Cousins racist text messages should absolutely be punished as well. That's why the AD and the Preseident of Mississippi State have asked for a list of the numbers from which Cousins received the texts. If Cousins can provide that information, I think there is a good chance those individuals get punished. Unlike what you probably think, there are people in Mississippi who are both not racists and fairly educated. Please, drop the stereotypical attitude.

It sounds like fans trying to deflect what happened again. Where are the comments about the racist text messages? Where are the comments condemning the criminals in that crowd? Instead people want to deny and pretend nothing bad happened. Come on people, it is 2010, and it is time to end these racist actions. I am not even going to begin to talk about the classless people who threw crap on the floor and the deplorable people defending them and not turning them in.

10,778 fans that night. 3 water bottles. Three People out of ten thousand seven hundred and seventy-eight. The actions of a few (literally, a few) were terrible, I agree. The vast majority (how else can I emphasize 'vast') were well mannered fans

I agree completely with Nathan, so that's where I stand on this issue.

My real problem is with your copy editor. You should really get a new one, because not catching a gaffe like "racial epitaphs" is pretty bad. I'm sure you meant epithets, but look up the difference. It's not small. Mistakes like that undermine the point you're trying to make by making you look like an amateur.

Wow, Ryan, that's pretty harsh. As a Mississippi State fan, I agree that those who acted idiotically need to be caught and punished. If I had seen who threw the few cups, I'd turn them in immediately. However, your account of the game seems a bit embellished. For instance, while the actions of the few idiotic fans are not to be condoned, you make it sound as if all of the stadium showered the court with debris. This is not true! There were 3 items thrown onto the court (the water bottle that "exploded" was a cup that landed in front of me). Also, there were no "racial chants" going around the stadium during the game. The majority of the fans were great, and primarily stuck to "Defense" and "AirWall" after the almighty John Wall aired a shot.

I am disgusted by the actions of those who disrespected the rest of my University, athletic department, and state. I am also tired of reading embellished accounts that paints every fan at that game as a boorish, racist redneck just because it fi

MSU students often threw beer cans at me as I rode my bike on country roads trying to keep in shape
    this doesn't surprise me
