Missouri Child Support Calculation & Guidelines

How Much Child Support Can I Expect?

What can you expect to receive for Child Support in Missouri? Missouri calculates child support using both of parent's incomes, child care expenses, the number of children, support payments for additional children or prior spouses and health care costs. If you have extraordinary expenses, the court will also take this into consideration. Child support guidelines vary from state to state.

Extraordinary expenses would be something like the care for a disabled child. The tuition for private school is not an extraordinary expense. If the parent agrees to pay, then it can be incorporated into the support payments.

Missouri does garnish child support payments. The custodial parent can have direct deposit or a SecuritE Debit Card for immediate access to the child support funds. If the non-custodial parent has a regular job, the paycheck can be garnished. Do not sign a waiver to stop this garnishment.

Here is an example of child support:

Dad- $96,000/year

Mom-$55,000/year (Custodial)

Childcare- $225/month (Custodial Mom Pays)

Children- 2

Healthcare Cost- $10/Month (Mom's Work)

Dad Pays: $1297

This is basically 16% of the Father's Gross Salary for child support. Each state has a different formula for calculating child support.

My personal experience in Missouri also gives me firsthand knowledge. The father is given a credit around 10% for the time he spends with the children. This reduces the support for two children to $1168 per month. This is only 14.6% of his gross income.

Missouri's child support formula is definitely not a top state for child support. There are several that are much worst, but Missouri would not be my first choice for good child support. It is a good state for the non-custodial parent especially if the custodial parent is working.

The neighboring state of Illinois pays approximately $1800 for the same situation. If I had know this before my divorce, I might have move to Illinois.

In the United States, 56% of Single Mothers are below the poverty level. The state government needs to address the child support calculations.

Fortunately I never had to deal with such a situation, but know a few people who did. It seems many go in blindly not knowing what to expect. Great article, Cheri!
