As shoppers and businesses across the U.S. got online for Cyber Monday, Missouri merges onto the Internet superhighway. The Monday after Thanksgiving is known as the day when online retailers offer deep discounts and free shipping. With big box retailers like Walmart participating in Cyber Monday, there are more and more people from Middle America who are participating in this cyber tradition.

Missouri's Governor Cautions Cyber Shoppers

Now that shopping online is mainstream in Missouri, Governor Jay Nixon urges shoppers to stick with vendors who they are familiar with and be familiar with their payment policies. "It's important to know how to spot a secure Web site, understand return policies and take the other steps necessary to make your Internet purchases work for you," Nixon said. The Governor's office encourages people with complaints to contact the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.

Main Street on Cyber Monday

After small independent retailers saw little upswing in business on the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, Missouri's "Main Street" anticipates a normal, if not quiet, day. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that 96.5 million Americans plan to shop on Cyber Monday this year, up from 85 million in 2008. Not only do small businesses have to contend with online shopping, the NRF claims that although many Americans currently face job losses and low income growth. The recession has forced many consumers to cut back in their shopping.

Local Businesses Offer Cyber Deals

Not all small businesses feel pushed out by Cyber Monday. Some, like local St. Louis resident Amy Herendeen is using the day as an opportunity to promote her home-based business as an AVON representative on such sites as Momslikeme.com. She encourages local shoppers to check out her website, "for some awesome steals and deals for your holiday shopping needs."
