Misspelling Words, or is it Mis-editing Them?

The Spell Checker and What it Wont Do for You

Thomas H Forthe
MISSPELLING

I hate misp mis-s err misspellings, not the act, but the inevitable editing misfires that cause havoc in published work. Nothing grates at me like finding errors in finished work, after editing it over and over until I know I have it correct only to find out I'm incompetent at editing my own work.

Misspelling words in forum posts and comment sections is further complicated with a lack of an edit function. I, not being a walking dictionary, find this frustrating.

Dyslexic typing, a true art form, and one of which I am a master can also cause misspellings. These evil keys seem to just jump out and force my dyslexic fingers to do the walking in oh so many disastrous ways.

Few things show a professional polish like typing away and then publishing a dexterous garble of misspent intellect.

Another aspect of spelling though more technically grammar, is the HOMOPHONE. A nasty little tribe of words all destined to ruin your day and cause hair loss!

Spell checker save me for I have aired, lead me not into miss configuration, and forgive my Homophones. A spell checker is a wonderful thing until you write something it cant distinguish, knead I say more?

Type that last paragraph into a document and check it for errors, I dare you!

Surfing writer's web sites or cites for the Homophone impaired, can be painful even for a beginner like myself, complete with missing letters or words. Even very good authors can make mistakes. Maybe there's hope for me after all.

Leaving horrendous examples of my ineptitude lying around is painful, not being able to fix them at all just impresses all potential readers to no end I'm sure.

The message here is to edit, edit some more and then re-edit. Then get someone else to edit what you're not seeing, this is after all your work and hopefully viewed by readers for years to come.

As usual my hindsight is 20/20 and I'll have to live with some glaring errors in editing. I boldly step into the future knowing my past misspellings will not stay comfortably in a closet where they belong.

Having trouble with your writing? Or your spelling, fear not it can be cured or at least modified with effort. Use a dictionary when in doubt; never assume the spell checker is correct until proven so. Look up any words you are not familiar with. There are web sites that will give words out every day to parse; Encarta Encyclopedia is an example found on MSN.com complete with definitions when clicked.

I'm infamous for bad spelling which like Cathy said, is so frustrating especially when you have proofread your work.

Oh how I hate it when I proof so carefully (I thought) and then see an error after the fact! Yikes....

Cute, although there are times I have caught myself yelling at the spell checker that I know something isn't a word, and ignore it anyways. LOL
