Mistakes to Avoid in Getting an Online College Education

Mike Harris
Online learning is quickly becoming an established route to take when earning a degree. For the technologically savvy, it presents a vast increase in learning opportunities. Online education gets rid of limitations such as location and transportation, thus widening the field of prospective students. When making your way through the wide array of offerings in online education, be sure to avoid these often made mistakes.

1. Little discipline and motivation: Getting an education online is not necessarily easy, and is definitely not the best fit for evoryone. Some students never graduate from online programs simply because they do not have the motivation to take their free time to do work and study without a structured class schedule. It takes a person with good time management skills to be able to balance an online education with the other demands of life.

2. Communicating with Professors: Learning in a regualar setting is a process that requires constant communication. Contrary to popular belief, education in an online setting is no different. You must be active in e-mail communication, class discussion boards, and other technological connections in order to succeed and get the most value out of the class. Not staying current in communication can lead to missed assignments, misunderstood due dates, and even failed tests.

3. Transferring class credits: For those who have college credit already, an online education might seem like a waste of those accumulated credits. But, by sending transcripts and applications to an online college like you would a regular one, you can chart the path to your degree and make it easier to achieve, in much less time. A few online colleges even accept credit based on work experience, so be sure to get in touch with administration to determine what constitutes credit at your online school.

4. Not using other resources: When looking at an online college, be sure to select one with resources beside the classes themselves. Many, for instance, have virtual libraries and article directories that can greatly improve your research and papers without having to trek to a library.

To get a legitimate, useful online degree, certain qualities from the student and the school must be present. By being disciplined, managing classes correctly, taking full advantage of credit opportunites, and finding proper resources, an online student can avoid the pitfalls that hold many back. In turn, they can set themselves apart from the pack, and build a great career and future from the comfort of their own desk.
