Mistakes to Avoid when Planning Your First Disney World Vacation

Sabah Karimi
If you're planning a trip to Disney World in Orlando, it can be overwhelming to sort through all the information available in Disney guide books, the Disney World website, travel brochures and online resources. Many first-time travelers to Disney World make the mistake of booking too many activities in one day, and fail to plan for transportation and dining reservations that need to be made several weeks in advance. Here are some other common mistakes to avoid when planning your first Disney World vacation:

1. Staying at an offsite hotel that doesn't offer complimentary shuttle service. Renting a car and navigating your way through the Walt Disney World Resort as a first time visitor can be a nightmare. If you're staying at a Walt Disney World Resort, you can rely on the free shuttle service and monorail to take you from park to park. If you're staying at an offsite hotel, make sure the venue offers complimentary shuttle or cab service so you don't have to make additional transportation arrangements.

2. Forgetting to make advanced dining reservations. Almost all of the restaurants with character meet-and-greets require advanced dining reservations, and other restaurants at the resort may require advanced reservations even if you're booking for just one or two people. You will need to call (407) WDW-DINE to make your breakfast, lunch or dinner reservations at the Walt Disney World Resort, and some allow you to book up to 180 days in advance.

3. Missing out on FASTPASS benefits. With a little planning, you can avoid many long lines and major crowds by jumping on your favorite rides that participate in the FASTPASS program. You get to skip the long lines when you check in to the FASTPASS booth with your theme park ticket, and will easily be able to make the most of your visit.

4. Forgetting to check the weather forecast. Even though most days in Orlando call for bright and sunny days, you will encounter thunderstorms, hail storms and high winds during hurricane season. Since many of the Disney theme parks and attractions - especially those at the Animal Kingdom Theme Park - are located outdoors, you will need to wear appropriate clothing and make sure you're carrying a poncho and rain gear during your trip. Don't forget the extra sun protection!

5. Heading into the trip without a food and beverage budget. You will be limited to buying food and beverages inside all the theme parks, and all of these come at a premium price. Most snacks at the carts cost between $3 and $10 each, and meals can cost up to $30 or more depending on the restaurant and theme park. Bottled water, soft drinks and other beverages can cost as much as $5 each. You won't be able to bring your own food or beverages into the park, so make sure you're armed with a budget and can plan for these extra expenses accordingly.
