Using a Misto is also healthier for you. Since you are using your own oil, it does not contain any chemicals like a aerosol can does. A Misto sprays approximately one-forth teaspoon per second of spray. Based on 120 calories/tablespoon of olive oil this equals 10 calories per second of spray.
Mistos come in brushed aluminum and stainless steel, with the aluminum being a little less expensive.
What can you put in a Misto? A Misto is made for olive oil, but you can use any type of oil in it. You can also fill a Misto with vinegar, soy sauce, or juice. Any liquid is suitable for a Misto as long as it does not contain particles that would clog the tube.
How does it work? You simply add about one-third of a cup of oil to your Misto and screw on the lid. Pump the top to pressurize and spray away. After spraying, gently release the air by twisting the lid. Store your Misto in the kitchen cupboard, not in the refrigerator. If stored in the refrigerator the oil may congeal or solidify in the sprayer and might compromise the mist.
Regular cleaning is recommended for your Misto. If you don't keep it clean, it might not work at all or it might stream the oil instead of spraying it. When my Misto is empty, I give it a quick cleaning before refilling it. I just rinse it well with hot water, making sure to clean the lid and tube well. You can also add a drop of dishwashing detergent to the bottle and pump the warm soapy water through the mechanism. Be sure to let the Misto dry completely before refilling.
I love my Misto and actually have two in my cupboard...one for oil and one for vinegar. These also make nice gifts for people who love to cook. A Misto helps you save money and is earth friendly.
