"I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included," Romney told FOX's Sean Hannity in a recent broadcast. "Of course this is a nation which needs strong leadership. And if the nominee of our party asked you to serve with him, anybody would be honored to receive that call ... and to accept it, of course."
The idea of Romney as John McCain's running mate has garnered mixed reviews.
Mitt Romney brings certain strengths that could compliment John McCain's strengths. Romney has a proven track record as a businessman and as well as a certain knowledge of economic issues that McCain lacks. Before he was governor of Massachusetts, Romney was most famous for having saved the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah from fiscal mismanagement.
Mitt Romney also has a certain regional appeal, having been born in Michigan and having been governor of Massachusetts, two states that would be very useful for a McCain headed ticket to pick up in the Electoral College. Even putting Michigan and Massachusetts in play would divert resources from McCain's Democratic rival that might otherwise be better spent.
Mitt Romney, however, comes with some baggage which should give John McCain a little pause. While Romney is certainly considered more conservative than McCain (he was considered the conservative alternative to McCain late in the Republican race), his conservatism is considered of recent vintage. As early as the 1994 Massachusetts Senate race Romney ran against Teddy Kennedy, Romney was proclaiming himself pro choice on the abortion debate. While Romney has explained the epiphany that led him to the pro life side, some social conservatives remain doubtful.
And then there is that Mormon question. It is a sad state of affairs to consider that a man's religious faith can still be considered a question for his fitness for public office. But Romney's rivals have used Romney's Mormon faith as a means to whip up public doubt about him. Teddy Kennedy certainly used it to some effect in the 1994 race. Romney was actually obliged to make a speech during the current campaign defending his religious faith, which impressed a lot of people.
Regardless of all that, John McCain could do a lot worse than find a way to bury the natural animosity of the campaign and choose Romney as his running mate. The conservative pundit Fred Barnes points out that Romney has already been vetted because of the Presidential campaign. A Romney pick, besides the advantages heretofore stated, would have no unpleasant surprises.

Post a CommentMormons are Christians
and I must say thats not very Christian of you.
As a Christian I can not vote for Romney ... he is a member of a false religion that believes in MULTIPLE GODS.
He believes he will be GODS EQUAL after death.
He believes is CELESTIAL SEX with MULTIPLE WIVES after death.
He believes that JESUS and SATAN are brothers. (Honest!)
He is a FAKE CHRISTIAN.
Rommey would bring a wealth of business knowledge to the goverment. You know businesses make money and don't spend it foolishly
Mcain and Romney is the only way to go. You ignorant people out there who think Huckabee is conservative are misinformed, he might be more conservative than mcain(very liberal) , but when it comes to views on education, tax, and war he is similar to Osama, imean Obama. Romney has the confidence and proven leadership skills to oust any candidate in the past 12 years. Mormons are strong in their family principles and us Americans are his family (have any of you perfect baptist people thought about that)Without Romney Mcain will not win.
Unfortunately most Huckabee supporters see the Mormon issue as an issue that cannot be forgiven by evangelicals. I however would disagree! This country was founded on religious freedom for all and I see a man In Mitt Romney who is capable and ready to lead on issues across the board. He has swung from previous left wing issues and made his stance on the right side of the fence! Lets Go Mitt!
Choosing Mitt Romney as vice president would be a wise decision, as he has a good economic record, he would be trustworthy and reliable in these tough times.
Mitt was the runner up for the nomination and hes a great leader.... I think old man river NEEDs his help.
I voted for John McCain for President, but would be VERY EXCITED to see MITT ROMNEY as his Vice President. He will compliment McCain because he is ARTICULATE, AN EXCELLENT SPEAKER, FAMILY VALUES, CLEAN CUT, AND HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE ECONOMY. I'm not Mormon, but, it doesn't even matter to me.
Romney is smart, confident and the would bring a lot of executive muscle to the table. We don't need a politician in the White House. We need smart, experienced, morale people to not only run but lead this country where it needs to go. Go Mitt!
McCain and Romney would be best thing for America right now!!!!!!!!! Romney would bring the GOP support the McCain needs and economic genius that McCain needs. Vote for McCain-Romney 08 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
