Mitt Romney Drops Out of Republican Presidential Race

Konko
Mitt Romney, once a front-runner candidate for the United States presidency, announced his intentions to withdraw from the race on February 7. At the moment of his campaign suspension, Mitt Romney had 270 delegates.

This was a small amount in compare of current front-runner John McCain. Although Romney spent more money, including some of his own fortune, than the other presidential contenders, he is currently trailing in the polls and in the delegate count in compare to John McCain. It was the appropriate time for Romney to step down from the presidential race.

Why did Romney's campaign fail? There was no real fault in the Romney campaign. The campaign was run very well and did not make any major mistakes. The only reason Romney did not gain traction was because John McCain was in the race. John McCain also ran in 2000. His name has much popularity. The strategy McCain used, focusing on the current war, attracted many Americans. Many Americans supported him in winning he war on terror. The strategy Romney used, focusing on the economy, did not tap into Americans as well. His was the reason his campaign failed.

Mike Huckabee, another Republican presidential contender, also took away from Romney's influence in the campaign. Since Huckabee's ideas are very similar to Romney's, many would-be supporters of Romney ended up supporting Huckabee. If Huckabee would not have been in the presidential race, it is possible that Romney would have one.

In Romney's resignation speech, he hinted that America's Republican's should support John McCain, as this would put a Republican in the White House. I predict that about 50% of Romney's supporters will switch to John McCain, while the other 50% will switch to Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. In conclusion, Mitt Romney has stepped down from the race and given McCain an almost certain victory.

Funny you talked about McCain as the war candidate and Romney as the economy candidate. Voters tend to be more concerned with the economy than with national security.

As a Romney fan, I don't plan on voting McCain (he's too socially and economically liberal). Part of me likes Ron Paul for his fiscal conservatism, but I don't think he's electable. I don't see anyone switching to Huckabee. Too many people blame him for spoiling Romney's chances.

It's too bad his wish to get a Republican in the White House won't be granted, since instead it will be John McCain. It's a win/win for the democrats. I did not support Romney, and Ron Paul is a whacko. True conservatism is found in Mike Huckabee, but not enough Republicans are willing to vote based on what they believe is right, but rather on fear and who has the best chance of beating Hilary or Obama.
