The first rule to an enjoyable Holiday - don't ruin your significant others traditions. They might think that your family's traditions are a bit out there as well! It's important to recognize that everybody's family is different, and it is in those differences that you find what really matters. If your significant other always opens presents on Christmas Eve and you've always opened them on Christmas morning, compromise and open half on Christmas Eve and half on Christmas morning. Just knowing that everybody is pitching in to make the holidays happy will put everyone in the Christmas spirit.
Second, don't forget that you are starting a new family. With your new family, you are bound to have new traditions! Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment with your old traditions. Look for new things to do. Make a tradition that is just yours. Everybody in your family will appreciate the fact that you all have something to your own. Who knows, your kids might grow up to follow those traditions with their new families as well! Especially if you and your mate can't agree on what to do Christmas Eve, don't do either! Do something entirely new and different. Try handing out presents at the hospital, singing Christmas carols in your neighborhood, or passing out food at the local soup kitchen. You'll be amazed at how good it makes you feel to help others instead of bickering amongst yourselves.
Last but not least, and yes, this is the simplest... remember not to fight. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter whose family you visit first. Make sure that you take the time to enjoy the holidays and whatever traditions they may bring. Christmas is about love, and you should always remember to tell everyone you love just how much they mean to you. The holidays shouldn't be spent fighting, they should be spent making new traditions with the people you hold closest to you.
In conclusion, there are several ways to mix new traditions and old traditions. Don't worry about the little things. Your family is your most precious gift, so treat them as such!
