MLB Player, Jim Thome Hits 599th & 600th Home Run Within Minutes of Each Other

Shirley Norling
After Minnesota Twins player Jim Thome hit his 600th record home run, something only 7 other Major League Baseball players have accomplished, he received a standing ovation in Detroit's Comerica Park on Mon. August 15, 2011. It was a well deserved ovation for the 40 year old MLB player, who just an inning earlier hit his 599th home run. One of the announcers made a comment about wondering how long it would be before Thome would possibly make his 600th home run hit. Needless to say, baseball fans didn't have to wait very long for the record winning hit to occur.

The only thing that may have made the occasion a little brighter for Minnesota Twins fans was if Thome had made the record winning hit at Minnesota's Target Field, instead of at the Detroit Tigers stadium. Despite that, it was still a very spectacular event for the Minnesota Twins, who have been struggling all season long. The Twins did win that game by a score of 9-6, a very much needed win for them.

The Detroit Tigers were very gracious to Thome after his 600th record winning hit, not only giving him a standing ovation, but also posting a congratulatory message on the scoreboard, which prompted the entire Minnesota Twins Team to come out of the dugout and greet Jim Thome at the home plate.

Jim Thome is the oldest person in MLB to hit his 600th home run, has only been in a Twins uniform for 2 years. He signed on with the Minnesota Twins last season and this season he's struggled with a number of injuries.

The boy from Peoria, Illinois, who grew up and lived their until 1989 when he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians is described as being one of the nicest men in the world by his teammates and peers. He's a hard hitter when it comes to baseball though, and has been compared to the likes of Babe Ruth in the world of baseball.

Jim Thome's baseball career started with the Cleveland Indians, where he played for 14 years. He later played for the Phillies, The Chicago White Sox , a year for the Los Angeles Dodgers before coming to Minnesota in 2010, where he proudly made his award winning 600th home run hit.
