MLB Team Needs at the Trade Deadline

Wordsleuth
With the trade deadline only days away, what do the teams competing for a spot in the playoffs need for success?

AL East

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are built very well for the long haul. With Lester coming back from cancer and Schilling coming off the DL, their staff will get a boost. The Sox are looking for another bat, but they don't really need it. Some bullpen help to take the place of disappointing Joel Pinero would be what they need.

New York Yankees

The Yankees aren't folding and they will be buyers. The Yankees need a first baseman. With Giambi out, and who knows how good he will be when he comes back, and Mientkiewicz on the DL, they need someone to be productive. Andy Phillips has been alright, but the Yankees would love Teixiera, Konerko or even Dmitri Young.

AL Central

Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers need bullpen help. With Zumaya down they need someone who can replace his spot in the bullpen. A trade for another closer could work, as good setup men are hard to find.

Cleveland Indians

The Indians need to find another closer. Borowski just won't get the job done well enough down the stretch. The Indians are fine offensively, especially with Travis Hafner heating up.

AL West

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels could really use another bat. They are in the market for a first baseman, but could also add an outfielder like Jermaine Dye or Adam Dunn, or they could add a third baseman like Mike Lowell or Troy Glaus. The Angels will also be in the market for a back of the rotation starter.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners need another starter, but they cannot find one that they like. Matt Morris could help. The Mariners bullpen and offense seem alright.

NL East

New York Mets

The Mets need a second baseman since their starter is out for the season. Mark Loretta and Mark Grudzelanek are the best candidates. The Mets could also use someone in the bullpen, Scott Schowenweis and Aaron Heilman are not getting the job done.

Atlanta Braves

The Braves really need another bat. There pitching staff has been alright, although the bullpen could use another arm, but the bats can't keep up a good offensive pace. Mark Teixiera could help, as could Konerko or Young.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies need another starter to stay in the race. They also need some bullpen help. Without either of these they have no shot to make up the grab with the two clubs ahead of them.

NL Central

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers need another starter after the injury to Ben Sheets. Their bullpen has also looked a little shaky recently and is a big reason why their 10 game lead is down to 2. The Brewers offense seems alright.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs need some bullpen help. They have the offense to get big leads, but their bullpen makes even the biggest lead tough to keep. Another closer like Chad Cordero could help.

NL West

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers really need some pitching help. Injuries in their rotation have made it essential to grab another reliable starter. A bat could also help them.

San Diego Padres

San Diego needs a big bat and some help in the bullpen. After being lights out all year, their bullpen is finally showing some signs of fatigue. They traded Linebrink, but now they need to find someone to replace him. With the fact that the Padres can't score runs, they can't afford to have a shaky bullpen. Wily Mo Pena could provide some offense or a cheap price.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks look like they may be in for the long haul. They have played well this season and they are certainly in contention for a playoff spot. The Diamondbacks are in need of a starter now that Randy Johnson is out for the season, but more importantly they need a bat. They could get Jermaine Dye if they are desperate enough.
