MLB Trade Deadline 2010 Hours Away

Robert Dougherty
The MLB trade deadline 2010 is mere hours away and trade maneuvers are down to the wire, although the MLB trade deadline crop has been depleted already. Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, and many of the biggest names on the market are already on their new teams. As such, there may not be much left to do today, with only a few important players left. Nevertheless, the last hours before the MLB trade deadline 2010 will have a lot of activity, even if not much gets done.

At 4 p.m. EST, teams will no longer be able to make non-waiver trades. But well before today, contending teams were able to make final moves for the pennant. The Rangers now have Cliff Lee, while the Phillies have Roy Oswalt, and the Angels took Dan Haren. Therefore, the name of the game today is to get big bats.

In the final countdown to the MLB trade deadline 2010, the big prize left may be the Nationals' Adam Dunn. The White Sox were trying to get him for their final push, but the word is not promising thus far. However, there are new reports that the White Sox inquired for Manny Ramirez, who is on the DL right now.

The White Sox already made a move yesterday to get Edwin Jackson, who threw a no-hitter earlier this year. Yet before the MLB trade deadline 2010, Jackson was expected to be traded again as part of a deal for Dunn. But if that doesn't get done, they may be stuck with Jackson.

Meanwhile, the Astros sold yet another veteran star to a contender last night. Reports have Lance Berkman going to the Yankees, to solidify their DH position. Yet he can still wave the trade prior to the MLB trade deadline 2010, although it appears he will wave his no trade clause. The Yankees will need his help to hold off the charging Rays in the AL East.

As for pitchers, the biggest name left to be moved before the MLB trade deadline 2010 may be Ted Lilly. The Dodgers have emerged as the frontrunners to get Lilly from the Cubs, as they try to catch up in the NL West. As for the Cardinals, they did not get Oswalt, but they may be close to getting the Indians' Jake Westbrook.

With mere hours to go, there could be some surprises left to come, and a final flurry of activity. Yet with the major movers and shakers already off the market, things may settle down. Still, the likes of Dunn, Lilly, Berkman and others may wind up making more of a difference than those already traded - assuming they do get moved by 4 pm.
