Most of the screen consists of the page and the formatting bar at the top. There are no other side panels to distract you while you are working on your project. If you want the formatting bar to disappear, simply toggle it to do so.
The Toolbar
The toolbar contains a variety of features that will make your work process more efficient. For instance, you can create a new file or open an existing one without having to move your mouse up to the File menu. Customizing your toolbar is a simple drag-and-drop process. You can even toggle it to disappear, so that all you have showing is the page.
Paragraph Styles
I remember the frustration I went through when trying to figure out how to make a first-line indent in both Word and Nisus Writer. You won't have that problem with myWritings. Click on the Inspector from the View menu (or the wrench icon at the bottom of the document pane) and make your settings. Click on the blue Styles icon in the toolbar to access the default text format settings. A hint box will pop up to tell you exactly how to access the styles box.
Snippets, Files, and Documents
You will find these three icons sitting in the middle of the toolbar. They were created to help collect your research materials so that you will not have to go hunting for them when you need to make a reference. The Files feature holds all your multimedia; the documents feature holds your text files; and, the snippets holds commonly used phrases that you use often. myWritings will not move the location of your files, but will link to them.
Other Features
myWritings comes with other standard features such as a spell checker and grammar checker. It will auto-save every minute unless you go into the Preferences file to disable the feature. It will export your documents as PDFs, mail attachments, RTF with pictures, and Doc with pictures.
Conclusion
I am impressed with myWritings and am seriously considering ditching Pages for my article writing. It appears to be a very stable program (unlike Word for the Mac), and I don't have to hunt around to use the most basic formatting features. I love how I can gather my research into one place and not have to open a bunch of finder windows. That is a convenience that I have yet to see in any word processor. In that way, myWritings is perfect for the freelance writer or student.
