Mobile Alabama is one of those old Southern establishments. Its part in the Civil War focused on Dauphin Island, an island serviced by a bridge on State Route 193. Fort Gaines, located on the island, is one of the historic sites that the Mobile area is famous for. Downtown Mobile and the surrounding area offers old antebellum homes that can be toured. Each home is surrounded by old fashioned Southern gardens. There are several historic districts that can be toured on foot. There are guided tours available, also.

The biggest family attraction may be the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. This site is dedicated to the Alabama residents who fought for their country. The USS Alabama is unique in that the decks, turrets, bridge, war room, and others parts of the ship can be toured.

The USS Drum, a submarine, is docked there, also. This sub was used in World War II. The torpedo rooms are an impressive sight.

There are many museums in Mobile. Each offers a different genre for viewing. There is a fire, carnival, and medical museum which are unusual.

No trip to Mobile would be complete unless you planned a visit to the famous Bellingrath Gardens and Home. The estate of Walter D. Bellingrath, who was a Coca Cola pioneer, is a treasure trove of antiques, and unusual coca cola items that were collected during his tenure of operation. This home is located in Theodore, Alabama, a short distance from Mobile.

The gardens that surround the home offer 900 acres of some of the most beautiful flora in the country. There are 65 acres that are planted with blooming plants. Each Spring and summer month features many blooming plants. Tours of the gardens and home are conducted daily. The azalea season at the gardens and around Mobile is in March through early April.

Overnight accommodations feature hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast inns. A complete listing can be obtained from the Mobile Chamber of Commerce.

Mobile is a shopper's mecca. Unique and quaint shops appear all over the town. Several malls are located just outside of the downtown area.

Transportation around town is convenient. An open air trolley makes the trip from downtown to Battlefield Park. This ride features a ride through the tunnel that goes under Mobile Bay.

Local cuisine runs from steak to fresh seafood. There are many fine dining establishments located in the town. The prices for these meals range from economical to expensive.

If you care for other entertainment, Mobile has a Greyhound Park located off Interstate 10. Racing season runs from January through mid December.
