The United States of America - the Home of the Brave or the Land of Big Spenders?

Theresa
The country I am reporting on is the United States of America. This country is the one I was born in; however, I am going to try to report on its condition without prejudice.

Geography

The United States are mostly South of Canada and North of Mexico. They are West of the Atlantic Ocean and East of the Pacific. I say most because Alaska and Hawaii do not fall into this category. Hawaii is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Alaska is West of Canada and East of the Bering Strait and Russia, much farther North.

There are two main mountain ranges: the Rockies and the Appalachians. The Rockies are a long stretch of mountains in the USA. Running North and South through most of Western America, they go through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. The Appalachians are on the Eastern side, running through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.

There is only one main river in mainland America, the Mississippi river. It runs through many states on a winding line from Wisconsin to Mississippi. It provides a useful trade route and a good place to travel along.

Issues

The Wars

America is a great place, but like all great places, it has its good side and its bad side. It is embroiled in a war against Afghanistan and also in one with Iraq. According to the CIA fact book, almost 4% of the GDP is spent on the military. Because of this, and many other economic problems, such as the stock market plunge and the increasingly more likely chance of a recession, America is now almost thirteen trillion dollars in dept.

Also, our wars are killing many good men and women. These people have loved ones who will never see them again. A good way to solve complex problems is sometimes to use an easy answer: pull out of the wars and use the troops, 4,000 of whom died in these wars, to improve the economy. Didn't George Washington, the so-called father of this country, tell us to keep our noses out of other peoples' businesses before he left office?

The Economy

The economy is in big trouble. There are many businesses that are failing, such as banks, insurance companies, mortgage lenders and consolidators, and some large firms like General Electric. The government has already borrowed too much money from other countries to ask for more, and they can't pay off the debt they have. Now, they have to rescue a lot of private companies, too. The stock markets are also taking big leaps and dives in more seemingly random patterns than usual. The government needs to try to fix all these problems if the economy is to bounce back.

Energy Dependence

Last, but not necessarily least, is the foreign energy problem. America imports a lot of its energy products, like fossil fuels, from other countries. This means that America is dependent on these other countries for electricity. If these countries have a shortage, they will use the electricity for themselves, and America will not have any electricity. A good way to solve this problem would be to develop better solar power and by putting up a satellite to convert light, radiation, and other energy forms into electricity to send to Earth.

To sum it up, America is in trouble, but can still be saved if the new political system reacts now. There is no way this country will survive if it continues to fall into debt and wars.
