Be A Little Innovative
Great modern style rarely mimics traditional design. Apply this principle to your bathroom design by seeking out bathroom fixtures that appear non-traditional. Faucets attached directly to the wall are a great example of modern design, as traditional faucets are always attached to the sink decking. Floating vanities, or those that attach to the wall and leave an open space on the floor below, are very modern feeling. Opting for a custom built tiled tub over a traditional drop in model allows you to achieve the sleek lines that define modern style without spending thousands on a "designer" tub.
Aim for Airy
Modern spaces feel open and cluttered, no matter what their size. Traditional over toilet storage cabinets intrude into the space and interrupt the smooth line of the wall. Have a niche recessed into the wall above your toilet instead to retain clean lines without sacrificing storage. By the same token, you don't want to overwhelm your space with a massive mirror hung by ugly mirror clips. Forget what everyone has told you about mirrors making spaces look larger, a modern bathroom demands a reasonably sized framed mirror. Ditch the frosted glass shower doors or frilly shower curtain and install frameless clear glass shower doors. The lack of hardware and glass texture makes frameless glass doors virtually invisible, removing a visual barrier and opening up the space.
Understand Modern Material Trends
Modern bathrooms are absolutely never carpeted. This old design trend is not only impractical in a bathroom, but unhygienic as well. Choose tile sized appropriately for the space - this means no 12"x12" tiles in a 5' x 8' space. Try to match your grout to the tile color rather than contrasting for a seamless uninterrupted look. Skip the wainscoting and paint your walls from floor to ceiling in a soothing understated color like grey. Chrome and brushed nickel finishes are the metals of choice for modern bathrooms (leave the two toned fixtures for you grandmother). Glass subway tile is a modern trend that complements any bathroom space, but use it with a little restraint to avoid overwhelming the space.
Giving your bathroom a modern overhaul can seem like a daunting task, but with a basic understanding of modern bathroom design elements you can achieve the sleek classy look you desire.
