The Sponge
Nonoxynol-9, the main ingredient embedded in the contraceptive sponge, is reported at 87% effective against the prevention of pregnancy during sexual intercourse, according to Youngwomenshealth.org. The sponge is highly regarded as one of the more modern efforts at pregnancy prevention amongst monogamous partners. Although the sponge is capable of suspending the use of latex condoms, it is totally ineffective at preventing STDs.
The Sponge's effective use
In order for the sponge to work effectively, it should be wetted by water and squeezed enough to trigger the nonoxynol-9 solution. Be certain to wash both hands first! Upon squeezing the sponge, the solution will began to formulate a soapy and foamy sort of suze. Afterwards, it must be placed inside of the female vagina with the pull-string facing the opposite direction of the fallopian tube towards the rear. Upon entry, the sponge will expose the nonoyxnol-9 solution to the inner walls of the female vagina. During contraction, the solution will continue to pump out the spermicidal solution which is a critical component of preventing fertilization. The contraceptive sponge acts as a physical barrier; not allowing sperm to travel through the cervix and into the female reproductive system.
Once inserted, the Sponge can work effectively for up to 24 hours. As reported by Youngwomenshealth.org (5/11/2006), "Leave the sponge inside of you for at least 6 hours after you have finished having intercourse, but no more than a total of 30 hours."
Note: Due to the high population of STDs in the United States and across the world, it would be wise to only consider this sexual contraceptive method for persons whom are, "sponge-worthy." Be certain to read the directions before and after use!
Remember: In one particular Seinfeld episode, the contraceptive sponge was taken off the market leaving Elaine Benes (Julia-Louis Dreyfus) with her last few. She vowed to only have sex with those whom were sponge-worthy.
The Male Condom
If the male condom is used effectively, it can be 75-99% effective against preventing pregnancy and STDs, making it the most selective choice during sex. During ejaculation, sperm is trapped on the inside of the condom preventing it from entering the female reproductive system. The thin protective layer is made of latex and designed to cover the entire the male genitalia. Because of its thinner material, condoms have to be treated with much care during sexual intercourse. Although they are most effective against preventing STDs and ranked close to the prevention of pregnancy compared to the sponge, condoms are at high risk for tearing.
The Male Condom's Effective Use
In order for the condom to be used effectively, it must be gently be torn from the packaging to prevent damage to the latex. Note: Suggestively, it is wise to observe the packaging of each condom to make sure it is not torn, contain holes and is not close to the expiration date. If any of the following pertains, disgard it and do not use it.
The male condom contains a small circular nipple at the base. By squeezing the nipple at the end of the base and gently rolling the inside of the condom overtop, it is ready for use. Note: Suggestively, it is wise to check the condom occasionally during usage to ensure it's still effective due to its high risk of tearing during intercourse. After extended use, Condoms tend to lose lubrication, thus, "drying out" and tearing due to friction which can cause pain, discomfort and less stimulation for both partners.
Both methods have pro's and con's with usage. But if used effectively and righteously, both methods can be effective at the prevention of pregnancy and STDs. In order to assure double the high percent of prevention, it is never harmful tfor both partners to consider using both.
