Modern Day Conveniences: How Did We Ever Live Without Them?

Aimee Gold
When I was younger I used to think I was born in the wrong time. I should have been born 100 years ago earlier. Now that I am older, the romanticism of the late 1800's still appeals to me, but I realize and understand I just can't live without a flushing toilet. I don't know why, but it's just not going to happen. My mother in-law has told me stories about when she was young and had to use an outhouse with the Sears and Robbuk catalog. So lets not forget toilet paper when thinking about flushing toilets.

Flushing toilets started me thinking of all the other modern day conveniences that I just couldn't live without. There are so many I don't even know where to begin.

There is the microwave and corresponding frozen dinners. Goodness, you got to love those. Then there is the iPod. I don't even want to think of all the CD's and or tapes I would have to cart around with me to get the equivalent amount of music on my iPod. The television is one of the greatest inventions ever. Combine that with cable, DVD player, and DVR what a wonderful way to combat boredom.

You also have drive-throughs and fast food. Holy moly! I can get a meal in minutes and eat it all without getting out of my car. Ooh ooh! My car, oh how I love my car. I can go wherever I want while listening to my iPod, in a fraction of the time it would take me to walk to my destination.

I don't think I could possibly survive without my cordless telephone (which also includes cell phones.) I can walk all over my house and yard while talking to my friends and family.

Computers and Internet. Yea no more piles of encyclopedias. All the information you could ever want at your fingertips and lightning speed. Woo Hoo. How could we ever live without that?

There are so many things that I would love to pay homage to, how did we live without some of these amazing inventions? Can you imagine having to heat water on the stove only to wash dishes by hand? Once again, heating water on the stove to take a bath instead of running through a quick shower? Having to brew coffee over and open fire just to get a sip with the grounds still in it. Actually having to go into the bank to get money instead of using a plastic little card to pay for purchases. Think about having to grow or butcher your own food rather than purchasing it in neat cellophane wrapped packages. Rubbing sticks together instead of flicking your Bic. I don't want to forget the hair dryer, Oh how I love the hair dryer, how much quicker getting ready in the morning because of it.

I so love the modern age and all the conveniences that go with it. Nope I was definitely born in the right time.

I have always wanted to write but being a high school drop out and a stay at home mom to four children I didn't think that would happen. When my mom died at the age of 50, I realized life was to short and I...  View profile

As I read, using my left hand to scroll on the laptop, while my right hand grasps the TV remote, something at the back of my mind disagrees with your conclusion. Maybe I should be sitting down reading by an open fire, instead of browsing and watching TV simultaneously in a thermostat-controlled room (while enjoying a pint of Guiness I hasten to add). Actually, maybe not. I quite like this technological age...
