Modern Day Convieniance

W. A. Swan
Writing this article made me think back a bit, quite a way back actually. Then I sat here and thought O, My God, what would I do without things that were literally unheard of when I was growing up? The things I take for granted today, well, most of them didn't come to pass until about two decades ago maybe.

Like, the microwave or the little convection oven that I use to cook lots of dinners with. Damn I'd be starving; either that or actually learning how to cook even though I don't like to most of the time. What would I do without my own computer? I'd have to go find an actual job I guess. Oh, and without the internet, I'd probably have to make sure I had a phone or a book of stamps to mail letters with because I wouldn't be able to send emails to anyone. Oh, and speaking of phones, heck I'm not sure if I could get used to the old style phone that sat on the wall, or that you could only move about ten feet with. God I used to hate having to run downstairs for the phone when it rang. Come to think of it, remember payphones? Oh wait, maybe you don't.

I just did an article today about the newest Motorola phone; which already makes my old fashioned flip phone seem obsolete. The new phones are the size of credit cards now. I still remember bag phones that looked like mini suitcases. God, credit cards and debit cards, I'd have to carry money around again; and I hate loose change. Come to think of it, I'd actually have to sit down and think about where the checkbook is these days; I know it's in a box someplace around here.

I'd have to plan if I were going to rent a movie. Oh wait, movie rentals weren't around all that long ago either. Maybe that's why I remember all the shows on NBC when I was growing up. Oh yeah, cable, forgot about having more than the local stations to watch. And today even cable is getting outdated. And there's still nothing on with 100 channels!

And of course, I'd have to plan my shopping around the time that the old supermarkets were open; if there was one nearby. There would be no dashing off to the mini mart for bread. I'd also be shopping about ten different stores to get the monthly list of supplies instead of one of the local Big Box stores that showed up in mass over the last two decades. And the supermarket, the one I'd have to go to since the mini mart wasn't around, wouldn't have the speedy checkouts and the in-store banking or pharmacy. Oh, and before I forget, there were no McD's in almost every town and you couldn't get pizza delivered generally up until maybe the late 80's or the 90's; which just got me thinking of how much I use drive-thru windows.

I'll tell you one thing I know lots of people take for granted - electricity. What would we all do if there were no electricity to run the lights, refridgerator, or the fans and air conditioners in summer. Man, I'd be dead without my fans. Oh, and there would be no TV; wow, we'd all have to go back to actually reading and talking to people in person again. And I hate my one neighbor.

Well, let's see, what would I do without all the modern stuff I have now? Huh; I'd probably be sitting here bored.
