Modern Day Slang for the Rest of Us, Week 1

Weekly Update on Slang for the Modern Day

Mauvekat
Considering the English language as a whole, slang fits an interesting part of our society. Slang forms from a variety of places, cultural references and so forth. It continues to change, update and all together often making little to no sense. Since slang is part of the "American" society as apple pie, it would be handy for those visiting our fair country, those living in it or those who just want to know have at least a bit of a guide to the slang of these days. Even some of this might be useful for adult understanding their children, or to understand our neighbors. So with this in mind, I am starting a weekly if not more often Slang of the Week to see what others might think. Joining in the idea of learning more about our slang and hopefully at least enjoy the story, comments and of course always to add something new for us to learn.

This week's slang word and story starts with: Blog.

I know most of us know what the heck a blog is. Officially, a blog is a shortened version/ slang term for web log, which is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.Or unofficially it is a place where the general people can play popularity contests with each other and occasionally bitch about their lives. Each blog can be set up by the user and edited by them usually with very simple tools and techniques. All blogs once posted can also be taken down by the user and edited on a whim. Each blog can also be searched through a search engine and read by pretty much anyone, unless the user causes it so only certain people can read their fine works of prose, journals or pictures of their cat Fluffy, depending upon the user.

Some have figured that Blogs are a phase in which society is currently going through or just a miniature cult. Personally I am not sure, it seems that they have taken off quite well and the people I know without a personal blog system I can list on one hand. But of course as always that is just my personal view point.

Hopefully this can help a bit with the word of the week for Blog. Next week will be something new and different. Please feel free to comment on what we would like to know about next.
