Modern Day Slang for the Rest of Us: Week 3

Mauvekat
Slang, it comes out in the strangest places. The other day, while doing some of my early Christmas shopping with my mother she used a slang term I didn't even know she knew. So with this story, I came up with the slang term of the week.

This week's slang word and story starts with: Bling.

My mother is a middle school teacher and hears some of the slang of the modern day in her own classroom. The story of this weeks slang came from my mother in a store looked at something loud and glittery and announced that it had Bling. Shocking to myself to hear my mother use and even know what the term Bling was. So I felt I should share the idea of Bling with other.

There are several definitions of term Bling.

Bling: Money, derived from the sound of a cash register opening. (Which is one of the many definitions of Bling.)

Bling: Bling is Diamonds, derived from Rapper Lil' Wayne from his song "Bling Bling", the sound of light gleaming off of diamonds, like old cartoons or commercials. (Another definition of Bling.)

Bling Bling: Gangsta jewelry, which is usually very loud and colorful.

Bling-Bling: Adjective meaning the newest or the latest.

All of these are perfectly good answers to what Bling means. It is a very versatile slang term that has become more popular over the years. Especially in music and common day language use, as shown beautifully by my own mother in everyday conversation.

Hopefully this can help a bit with the word of the week for Bling. Next week will be something new and different. Please feel free to comment on what we would like to know about next.
