ABC is introducing a new half-hour comedy on Wednesday nights called Modern Family. Modern Family is scheduled to premier September 23rd at 9pm but you can see the pilot from now until September 20th with the password and the link at the end of this article.
Modern Family is a mockumentary comedy show. It is filmed in the same form as other documentary shows like Jon & Kate Plus 8 with the families discussing their lives while sitting on couches.
Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire's (Julie Bowen) family is the first family introduced. They are middle-aged couple with three children: Haley, Alex, and Luke. The show opens with the family going through the routine motions of a hectic morning.
Phil is a father who is trying to fit in and be cool especially when it comes to his 15 year old daughter, Haley, and her boyfriend. Phil attempted to teach his son Luke a lesson about BB guns by shooting him with a rubber BB. I admit, the scene was funny but definitely not appropriate for kids.
The second family featured on Modern Family is Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) and Gloria's eleven year old son, Manny. Gloria is a hyper soccer mom from Columbia who is not afraid of using her South American feistiness. She brags that her little town was the #1 village in Columbia for murders.
Jay spent the episode getting picked on because of his age. The age difference between Gloria and Jay does not bother Gloria but sometimes it gets the best of Jay.
The final couple on Modern Family is Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet). The gay couple have been together for five years and just adopted a baby girl, Lillian, from Vietnam. Mitchell is very defensive and self-conscious about his relationship with Cameron. Cameron is a stereotypical flamboyant gay man.
Mitchell is afraid to tell his family that he and Cameron adopted a baby. Cameron took the initiative and invited Mitchell's family to dinner in order to surprise them with their new addition. This is where the entire show finally comes together.
Modern Family was created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. The show is director by actor/director Jason Winer.
The first fifteen minutes of Modern Family was mildly amusing at best but I ended up laughing during the last five minutes. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello calls Modern Family "the funniest show I've ever seen in my entire life." It was amusing but I wouldn't go that far.
Modern Family has potential to be a great mockumentary. It will all depend on the next few episodes. I would rate the pilot episode at a B-. The only thing that saved Modern Family was the last five minutes of the episode.

Post a CommentGood review, but can anyone spell COLOMBIA? It's a country, not a college.
I thought it was pretty funny.
We've been watching the TV previews for this show with interest. Could be a good one, thanks for the review.
Nice review, and the title mixed with the premise seems strangely ironic!
Loving the new name, awesome as always... :o)
;-);-)
These kinds of shows tend to aggravate me so I'll be staying away but it could find an audience.
I didn't recognize your name! I was wondering, "Who is Kim Keasan?" I'm so glad I didn't delete the email! :-)
Although I do not care for this type of show, I bet this has potential. It sounds like it could get interesting. Thanks, Kim!
