When Phil wanted to beat out a fellow employee, Gil Thorpe with salesman of the quarter he was thrilled to get a possible listing with the neighbor who ended up being the speeder. He was trying vainly to keep Claire from knowing who this woman was because he wanted the sale. This is just one of the themes during this episode.
Manny was going to ride his new bike to school because all of the cool popular kids rode their bikes to school. When Jay saw that he had training wheels on his bike he was mortified. He told Gloria that Manny would be a laughing stock if he rode his bike to school with training wheels on it. He then found out that she didn't know how to ride a bike either. His mission was to teach them both how to ride their bikes on the weekend. Manny was a natural but it was Luke that was able to teach Gloria how to ride in a very creative way.
The best part of Modern Family was the new guy Barry that moved in the upstairs apartment in the building that Mitchell and Cameron live in. When Cam saw this hunk, dripping wet in their hot tub he was shocked. He and Mitchell were trying to compose themselves when they saw him. They introduced themselves and found out that he thought that the hot tub was available to all of the residents in the apartment building. Cam was trying to get Mitchell to stop judging people and got Mitchell to admit that he had misjudged Barry.
Cam and Mitchell were beginning to like the new-agey Barry in spite of his off beat ways. When Cam discovered him living in Lily's princess house things really get out of hand. Mr. Alpha male Barry gets a bit out of control. It is really the funniest part of the whole episode. I personally love Cam and Mitchell the most in Modern Family. Mitchell is the perfect straight man for Cam's outrageous personality. The faces that Cam makes are priceless. If you have never noticed, pay attention to the photograph of Mitchell and Cameron together above their mantel. That alone cracks me up.
In another episode of Modern Family Cam and Mitchell were complaining about not having a upscale restaurant to go to after work. They found out that Amelia's, which was a classy restaurant close to home, was owned by one of the mothers where Lily went to nursery school. They set up a play date with her so that they could get an in to the restaurant. When Cam accidentally smashed a strawberry juice box onto Amelia's $40,000 rug, Mitchell and he became hysterical trying to find a solution to clean or hide the stain. You must see this episode if for no other reason than to see this scene.
Unfortunately the last episode was preempted by President Obama's state of the union address. This is of course more important than any sitcom, but I was disappointed that it aired during Modern Family.
