Modern Ideas About Dragon Origins

Chris Tidwell
Dragons have long been revered as myths and legends, told as tales from the time of King Arthur and his knights of the round table, but what is the true nature of the dragon? So many cultures incorporated this mythical beast that there would have to have been some kind of explanation for two cultures, the Europeans and Asians, with no contacts at all to have had stories of the same creature. Now evidence is emerging that might shed some light on this mystery.

Dragons are said to have been huge reptilian creatures with bird like talons, thick skin and long tales. Other features of dragons would commonly include wings, spikes, sharp teeth, and long necks. Now looking at the above descriptions I have described a dragons perfectly, at least in physical appearance, but there are other animals that share these same characteristics, like the long extinct race of the dinosaurs.

If you look at the skeleton of a monstrous dinosaur it is easy to see how someone stumbling upon this creature in the middle ages could have mistaken it for a living creature that was feared. People in the middle ages did not know how old our world was and thus had no concept that the bones of "Dragons" were not really of creatures living in their current era, but rather huge creatures that had been dead for millions of years.

Dinosaurs roamed the earth from one corner of the globe to the other for millions of years, and so when they died out it would stand to reason that their remains would have been scattered around the world. Numerous dinosaur remains have been discovered in places like China, Mongolia, Germany, Mexico, every place imaginable, and so this would explain why the legend of dragons would have been spread across the continents, from Europe to Asia, Africa and South America dinosaur bones are everywhere, and thus dragons and their legends are everywhere as well.

There are shops in Asia that sell "essence of dragon" a powder that is said to be a medicine that will increase fertility, and is sold to anyone willing to buy. Upon hearing of this "medicine" scientist investigated and they were told that this "essence of dragon" was made by grinding up dragon bones and mixing them with various other items. Upon further investigation of the "dragon" bones it was discovered that they were nothing more then dinosaur bones, but at the site they were taken from the monstrous dinosaur found did indeed resemble what you might think a dragon looked like.

So were dragons ever really a part of our ancestors culture? Yes, but weather or not they existed for real and attacked villages, and kidnapped princesses is still up for debate. The doubt about the existence of dragons is certainly prominent, but we all hang on every word of news of their possible existence each time something new emerges from the depths of history, but no matter what way you look at it, dragons have had a huge influence in the lives of man for centuries, and will for centuries to come.

The Chinese Dragon flies through the cloud and more closely resembles a serpent while the Dragon of Western culture is more commonly accepted as the image of what a dragon really looked like

Interesting article. My husband has theories about the dragon too.

According to the more religious of fanatics and my old homeschooling workbooks, supposedly dinosaurs and people did coexist at some point...heh...

That's interesting that you linked Dinosaur bones to dragons. I've always thought the same, with all the stories of dragons, people must've had some experience with them (which made me think of dinosaurs also).
