Cabinets are usually the largest single expense that goes into building or remodeling a kitchen so you want to choose carefully. There a large number of styles, colors, knobs, hinges, accessories and storage features to choose from which can make choosing the right cabinets for your kitchen challenging.
When it comes to kitchen cabinets storage space should always be your primary goal and appearance should come second. It doesn't matter if you have beautiful kitchen cabinets if you can't fit anything in them. When choosing your kitchen cabinets try to design the layout to maximize the space in your kitchen. To do this draw out a floor plan of your kitchen on graph paper or on your computer and play around with different cabinet layouts to see what works best.
Alternatively, Ikea.com offers free kitchen planning software that you can download which allows you to build a virtual kitchen on your computer so you can get both a 2-D and 3-D view of what it might look like. Although the software only comes programmed with Ikea kitchen cabinet models it will still help you to get a good idea of what will work and what won't in your kitchen space. Then if you choose you can always shop for kitchen cabinets elsewhere.
When choosing the layout for your kitchen consider both the space and how you like to work within the kitchen. Try to make the main work areas of the sink, stove and fridge as efficient and easy to use as possible. Also keep in mind that some base cabinets come with rounded or contoured edges that allow them to fit where a traditional base cabinet wouldn't.
If you are on a budget you should try to avoid the need to have anything custom built. By going with stock models of kitchen cabinets you can save a lot of money. Having said that though if you need to purchase a custom peace or two it can be worth the money for the extra storage and ease of use that it provides.
If you don't plan to update or remodel again for a long time avoid choosing brightly colored kitchen cabinets, and instead opt for something more traditional such as wood tone, white or black cabinets. Colors can quickly go out of style and cause your kitchen to look dated in no time. Choose a finish on the cabinets that is both durable and easy to clean.
Buying kitchen cabinets is a large expense so make sure to shop around and consult experts for assistance if necessary.
