Modern Spice Storage Solutions for Kitchen Cabinets

Say Goodbye to the Spinning Spice Racks of Yesteryear

Jessie Kay
Kitchen cabinet spice storage options have come a long way since the tacky spinning spice rack that Grandma had. Sure, when you were a kid, it was fun to spin the carousal of spices 'round and 'round until the ginger got dizzy, fell off, and spewed its granules all over the counter. You're an adult now with a kitchen of your own and you've no time for silly spice spinning games. Although you love Grandma, you don't want your kitchen to look like hers, and it starts with getting the right spice rack. Here are a few kitchen cabinet spice storage solutions without making your kitchen look like Grandma's house.

Spice Storage for Kitchen Cabinets: Drawer Storage Options
Cabinet drawer spice storage options are a great way to keep your magic spices out of sight and off the counters. Spices can go bad from too much exposure to sunlight and a drawer storage option thwarts this problem. Many of these spice draw organizers hold the spices in a slight upright position, allowing you to see all of your spices at once. The drawback is that the spices are almost lying flat, making it a threat for spills.

Here's a spice drawer from Improvements Catalog. It's an in-drawer spice organizer that can be expanded on both sides to custom fit your drawer. The compartments can also be adjusted to accommodate larger spices, such as salt containers. It will hold up to 36 spices and adjusts from 12 inches to 23 inches wide

Another option is an upright, 20-bottle in-drawer spice rack. Typically, for these models, you need to empty your spices into the designated bottles. This could be a time-consuming, all-afternoon project. But once you're done, this time-saving spice storing method will eliminate all of that rummaging through your cabinets, looking for the jar of allspice.

Spice Storage for Kitchen Cabinets: Have a Spice Carousal Installed:
If you really like the idea of a gyrating spice rack but don't want it taking up counter space, have your cabinet builder install one for you inside one of the cabinets. Typically, these built-in spice spinners are about 30 inches in height and have 3 spinning racks on which to place the spices. Set the spices on the rack, give it a flick, and send the ground cloves and beef bouillon cubes on a whiling, twirling merry-go-round style adventure, all hidden behind cabinet doors.

Spice Storage for Kitchen Cabinets: Have a Pullout Drawer Installed:
If you're still in the process of ordering or designing your kitchen cabinets, think about having a spice pullout drawer installed. This option eliminates any need to search for an elegant spice storage solution, eliminates clutter, and looks elegant.

Spice Storage for Kitchen Cabinets: Pull Down Spice Rack:
This rack from the Container Store mounts on an upper cabinet and is made of wire. It allows you to pull the rack down and grab your spices, garnishes, or whatever kind of magic potions you need for your dish.

Spice Storage for Kitchen Cabinets: Mounted Door Spice Racks:
If you have large doors in your cabinets, you can mount a spice rank to the inside of your cabinet doors. Typically, these racks have three or four ties and are made of wire. They allow you to easily see where your spices are, keeping everything organized. This frees up your cabinet space for food. The drawback? If your cabinet doors will get slammed shut (inevitable if you have children), your spices might tip over, fall out, or spill. If you chose this style of spice rack, and you have children, think about putting a lock on the cabinet where the spice rack will be installed.

Hopefully these suggestions give you a few ideas for spice rack storage solutions for your kitchen cabinets.

love your suggestions...I should follow your advice, we have a whole spice cupboard that really should be dealt with, even tho we try to keep them in alphabetical order, they never stay that way and end up looking all over for what I need...thanks for the suggestions. I've added you as a fave.

Wish I had more drawers to use that option. Great suggestions. I still have those spinning things in my cabinet. I kinda don't mind my kitchen looking like grandmas.
