Moles: The True Story Behind These Ugly Growths

Amy Witthohn
Moles, I can honestly say that as these may come in all shapes, assortments and sizes. None are even remotely attractive. Moles are a skin disorder know as nevi. They are pigmented cells that appear as small spots on your body. Moles grow and change very slightly over a period of time. They do come in a range of colors and can pop up anywhere on your body. Usually when surgically removed, they usually don't come back. Most moles are harmless, but in rare cases they do develop into cancer. You need to monitor your moles, and note any change to your doctor. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Causes-
Melanin is a pigment that gives your skin its color. Melanin is usually evenly distributed evenly throughout the skin, but sometimes they cluster causing moles to form. Most moles are harmless, but some moles are different looking in appearance these are called dysplastic nevi, and this type of mole could turn cancerous. The back is the most seen place for moles.

Signs and Symptoms-
Moles come in all shapes, sizes and various colors. They can range from flesh colored to blue with most falling in the light to dark brown category. They can be extremely small and flat or large and raised. A mole can start out flat and later become larger and raised. Any hormonal changes within the body can make a mole more subject to change.

When to go to the doctor-
As with all moles, I would suggest letting a doctor look at all moles, but if you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment immediately.

If they become painful to the touch

Itching or burning

bleeding

if they start swelling, getting bigger

if they get crusty or start to peel

Any changes take place color, size or etc.

Mole Removal-
If you have decided that you are ready to have the mole or moles removed their are various ways this can be done, and I'm sure your doctor will recommend the best one for you but some examples include: surgical, either by cutting or laser. Depositing acid on the mole to burn away the tissue. There are over the counter treatments, but these all are met with mixed reviews. Basically an average person can have between 10-50 moles and sometimes more than that. We all agree they are not the most attractive thing to have, but luckily with today's technology we can remove them if we so choose. If you decide to keep your moles just monitor them for any changes, and let your doctor know if you have any concerns.

I live life to the fullest extent that I can, I have 2 daughters 11 months apart and the antics that they do on a daily basis will keep me on my toes for a long time.  View profile

Don't be rude, MOST people in the world have between 10-40 moles (ask any doctor) so you should not come out and say that they are all ugly...that is akin to saying that all eyes are ugly...it is just part of people's bodies. If they start becoming deformed or causing a problem then you should do something about it, otherwise there is no problem.
