Mom Guilty of Killing Her Three Sons

Jeanne Marie Kerns
Cynthia Lord was a mother of 4 children, three teenage sons, and a daughter until she decided to kill her three oldest sons, Christopher 19, who was playing videos games at the time, Michael 18, who had been sleeping, and 16 year-old Joseph who was coming home from school, with a single gunshot to each of their heads in March of 2004. The reason in her mind for killing her own children was that she had feared they had all become evil clones or robots. Luckily her 15 year-old daughter had not been home when the shootings went on, or Lord said she would have killed her as well.

Once police had arrested Cynthia Lord, she had told them that she had planned to kill her sons since October of 2003 when she purchased a hand gun. It just took some time for her to settle on her decision of taking the young lives of those she had created. A girlfriend of 18 year-old Michael, Kacie Carlson, told police that she had believed by the actions she had seen, Cynthia was just trying to keep the boys from moving out of the house. She also added that "I agree that she's ill and that she does need help, but at the same time it's hard because I feel like she should really be in jail"

Cynthia Lord 45, who is convicted of three counts of first-degree murder is looking at facing as much as 99 years in a mental institution, or half in jail and the other in an institute, sat inside the court room, her hair looking all raggedy and dirty, just sat there, with no expression at all while Alaska Court Judge Philip Volland read the verdict. In the mean time until Cynthia is sentenced on August 24, 2007, she will be confined to the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center, which is Alaska's female prison.

Those who knew Cynthia are shocked and amazed that she would have done something so drastic to her boys. Other expected something different, but surely not death. A cousin to the three young boys, Sarah Raffuse , and the only family member that came to court Monday stated that "It's the best thing we could've hoped for", regarding the verdict for Cynthia Lord.

At the end of the court hearing, Cynthia Lord was given the opportunity to speak to Judge Philip Volland. With her voice cracking and her hands shaking as if she had been nervous, the only thing that Cynthia Lord read was "Evil' was 'telling me I have to kill the kids, I have to kill the kids right now, tonight."

My passion is writing. Helping those in need get their message out is something I strive for. I love to interview those who do not feel that what they have to say is not being heard. My hand is the extension...  View profile

    This is my mom, and those are my three brothers. She did need help and my family saw that very soon and took me from her custody. I did live with her and had contact with her for as long as i could. It is very sad and i miss them horribly, i dont know why things like this happen but now theres no changing it. and that is the saddest part of it all.

    THose boys were personal friends of mine. As I do agree this is a tragic story, your information is very skewed. Kacie Carlson was not dating Michael at the time, the sister they have couldn't have come home because she doesn't live in Alaska and basically has no contact. Those who knew Cynthia knew that she was mentally ill and often acted out much like someone suffering from paranoid schizophrenia or something of that nature. While nobody would have expected things to get this far, it did not come as a big shock that she was mentally insane. The boys had planned to move out earlier in the previous year but made the personal decision to stay because they KNEW their mother needed help. As far as I know, they were unaware that she had stopped taking medications that they said usually kept her stable. But there were previous instances of violence she committed against them and yet they stood by her because they believed she was mentally ill and wasn't intentionally trying to hurt them. I

    This one I just can't get my mind around. I just don't get it. Thanks for the information though. Another job well done!

    I hope this woman gets the treatment she needs in an appropriate facility, but I hope I never meet her on the streets as anyone capable of this needs to be behind bars. For those who can't fathom it, the woman was suffering severe mental illness; she was mad, crazy, insane.

    I can't even imagine something so horrible. This seems to be happening more and more often. :{
