Michele Kalina in Jail

Pennsylvania mom, Michele Kalina, is accused of killing five infants and keeping their bones in the closet. Police have arrested Michele Kalina after her adult daughter found bones in the closet of their apartment in June.

Kalina daughter and husband first reported that they had found bones in the closet back in June. Police initially thought that the bones were fake and told them to throw them away, but later when they found more bones, the police began investigating the infant sized bones.

Police later learned that Michele Kalina, 44, had been carrying on an affair for many years. Both her husband, Jeffrey, and her boyfriend say that they did not ever know that Michele was pregnant. Michele worked in the health care industry and always wore hospital type scrubs. She had an excellent work history. Kalina's husband was disabled and lived with Kalina and their daughter in the apartment.

DNA tests have now shown that Kalina's long term boyfriend fathered three or four of the infants whose remains were found out of five sets found. Investigators believe that they have recovered all of the bones.

Kalina gave birth to a daughter in 2003 that was also a result of the affair, but gave her up for adoption. Kalina also has a 19 year old daughter with her husband Jeffrey and a boy that had cerebral palsy and died at age 13 in 2000.

Some of the remains were inside coolers and encased in cement in the closet. No one in the family was allowed to go into the closet, but the 19 year old daughter was determined to clean it out. The remains had been removed from a home where the family lived previously to the apartment.

No one knows how she kept the pregnancies a secret, but investigators believe that the babies were born alive.

Michele Kalina is being held on abuse of corpse charges and one count of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and other charges.

This will be a difficult case to prove because police do not know when the babies were born or how they died.

There have been numerous cases of the years where women have given birth at home and then killed their babies or allowed them to die from neglect and then stored them in a closet or storage. Most cases are impossible to prosecute, especially when the women claim that the babies died naturally after, during or prior to birth and their is no way for prosecutors to prove otherwise.
