Mom Opens Up

A Locked Up Past: Part 8

Bud Young
Tony was walking up the sidewalk when Mom opened her door. He swallowed his irritation. He would have rather had an opportunity to gather his thoughts

"Hey, Mom!"

Mom's smile was a little too smug.

"Hey, Son, I thought you would be back sooner."

Tony's jaw clinched harder and he took a deep breath. Mom closed the door behind him and Tony took his seat at the bar, placed his elbows on the bar and placed his head in his hands. Mom sat beside him and placed her hand on his back. Several minutes passed by. Tony finally looked at his mom.

"You knew what Dad was doing, didn't you?"

"Yes, I am sorry. I had to play along"

The confused look on Tony's face was obvious.

"He asked you to?"

"Yes, Tony, he did. After he apologized to me and I was able to accept it, we discussed you. We both agreed that our biggest mistake was presenting a negative image of God to you. We hid who we really were from you. We both loved God, but, life had confused us on our faith. Your father's resentments imprisoned him and my regrets imprisoned me."

Tony's fatigue broke through. He laid his head on the bar and the tears flowed. He felt his Mom rubbing his back like she did when he was sick as a child. The comfort he felt from this still came through. She leaned over and kissed his cheek.

Tony wiped the tears away. "Mom, what am I supposed to do with all of this?"

"Honey, Just feel it and do what your father asked you to."

Tony gave his Mom a hard look. "So, you want me to give God a chance?"

Mom didn't flinch, "Yes, Tony, I do."

Tony, shook his head and looked his Mom in the eye.

"Mom, I can't promise anything."

"Of course you can't Son, of course. No matter what you choose, Son, I will always love you."

Tony takes his mother in his arms and crys with deep sobs on her neck. She places her chin on his cheek and lets the tears flow herself. Years of repressed pain flowing out of their eyes. Finally free from a past locked up for too long.
