Moments of Motherhood: Proud Parent

Tfurby
As a parent I have had many proud moments, but I have to say my finest hour as a mother came about a month ago, when my son returned home from living out of state for the last five years. I live in Texas, have for my entire life. When my son broke the news that he and new family would be moving to Florida, I knew that visits would be out of the question. Our family are what could be called low-income, my son and I both realized we would not see each other for a very long time. As a Mother, I knew it was time to cut the apron strings, let him spread his wings and hope that he would fly. Motherhood and parenting at large are full of these hard lessons of letting go.

My son not only flew, he soared! He found a wonderful job and through hard work and diligence, he worked his way to the top. Score one for motherhood, I guess my parenting skills were not too shabby. Eventually, with only phone calls for visits, my son could not handle the separation from his family any longer. He saved, until he had enough money to move back and live comfortably, until he could secure a job. He and his young family, moved home.

My proud moment as a mother and a parent? When my son moved, he was a 22 year old child. Maybe not physically but mentally. When he returned, he was a 27 year old man. Full of self confidence and secure with the knowledge that he could handle any and all situations that life could dish out.

Man he may be but when I first laid eyes on him after so many long years, I still saw my little tow headed boy, skinned knees and bare feet. My heart almost exploded with love. Isn't motherhood and proud parent the best feeling in the world? There is no better.

I enjoyed this story Aunt Tommie. As my oldest prepares to turn 18, this article was reassurance that no matter what, he will be ok. We all grow up and we all watch our kids grow. I don't think we ever prepare for the day that they go from being the little rascal that is running around in diapers to being mature, respectable adults. Everything always has a way of turning out just fine.

Letting go is certainly one of the most difficult times as a parent; how rewarding your experience turned out to be.
