Mommies Helping Mommies

A Personal Story

Lissa Bagley
When my middle daughter was born I learned all about the world of mommy message boards. When she was just two weeks old I was logging in and chatting about everything from diaper brands to politics. I met a lot of wonderful women on this message board and began to meet a few of them in person.

One of the mommies (we will call her Mrs. X) offered up an extra coupon she had to The Children's Place to whomever wanted it. My daughter was starting to grow out of all the size 0-3 month outfits we got at the baby shower and I needed to do some shopping. I had never heard of The Children's Place before this but all of the mothers on the board boasted about the greatness of this children's clothing store. I replied to the thread saying that I would love to have the coupon and she responded by telling me she would drop it off at my house while she was out running errands.

A few weeks later I had a horrible toothache and really needed to get to the dentist. Being a first time stay at home mom I had no idea what to do. I didn't know very many people and most of our in state family works during the day. My husband worked during the day and was currently out of town for work. How was I supposed to sit in a dentist chair having my teeth repaired with an infant who demanded attention every second of the day? I logged into the mommy message board and posted in the forums that I had a dilemma. Lots of the mothers responded to me offering help and advice. Mrs. X responded that her husband had the day off of work so he could watch her two children and she would meet me at the dentist to watch my daughter. I could not believe how wonderful this offer was. I had offered to pay her, buy her lunch, and drop my daughter off at her house even though it was out of the way. Mrs. X would have no such thing and met me at the dental office. She sat out in the waiting room playing with my daughter while my mouth was numbed and teeth were drilled. It was one of the kindest things that anyone had ever done for me.

Over the years I met lots of mothers on this message board. Some of my experiences were good, and others were not so great. Those good experiences far outweigh any and all of the bad ones. I have found more help and advice through the women on my mommy message board that I would have ever found in person.
