Mommy

A Poem for My Mother

Amber S.
Mommy,

I outgrew your tummy

So you let go of me.

I outgrew those little socks

And my favorite climbing tree.

I outgrew the clothes you made.

I outgrew the shoes.

I outgrew the baby spoons

And I outgrew the terrible twos.

I outgrew my little gloves

The ones that grandma made.

My hands just wouldn't fit inside

So we gave them away.

I got too big for my crib

And that plastic Big Bird chair.

I thought that I had outgrown you

The day you cut off all my hair.

I got big and I left home.

I outgrew my dorm room.

And then I found a little thing

Was growing in my womb.

Now I am a mommy, too

And it's not hard to see

That this little girl I love

Will one day outgrow me.

I'm too big to carry now,

Too big to have you kiss my sores,

But my heart will never be

Too big to fit inside of yours.
