Mommy Blogging: Free Therapy, New Friends, Unexpected Solace

Shelley Frost
I have a confession. I'm addicted to mommy blogging. It started out innocently enough, a few posts here and there. Soon, I found myself seeking out other mommy blogs and improving my own. I check in with my fellow mommy bloggers first thing in the morning, even before a cup of coffee.

Addiction may be a strong word. But I have found an unexpected support system in the world of blogging. Motherhood can be an isolating experience, particularly for those of us who stay at home with our kids. We all love our kids more than life itself but lack of adult contact takes its toll.

Regardless of our situations, moms convince ourselves we are the only ones struggling. I'm the only one who feels like a bad mom because the baby bumped her head on the bathtub. I'm the only mom who loses her patience and snaps at the kids sometimes. I'm the only mom who serves dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets that barely qualify as meat. We all think we're going it alone and that no one else could possibly understand our situation.

Joining the ranks of mommy bloggers has taught me that nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, many moms walk a similar path. Many moms struggle to find themselves amidst all of the dirty diapers, soccer games, and temper tantrums. We all have our "I'm a bad mommy" days. And we live to tell about them. Even in the midst of chaos, there is comfort in knowing there are other moms out there who understand.

I view my blog as a form of therapy. I blog about my experiences to help me understand them and to find comfort in other moms who understand what I'm experiencing. I have gained many new friends because of my leap into the blogging world. Blogging and online social networking enables me to reach out to other moms and find the support I need right from the worn out spot in my leather sofa while wearing my less-than-flattering yoga pants. And I don't even have to shower!
