Mommy magic is something that manifests in your life when you are a child. Mommy magic, though, can span decades and often beyond the human realm of touch and thought. With her mystical spirit, a mother is a miracle worker and always there to make the boo-boo better.
Young kids do not give mommy magic a second thought. It is what it is and there is no need to question the theory behind it. Moms can fix anything! They fix broken toys, they fix homework mistakes and they fix the satellite dish when the TV goes out.
Moms can fix a broken heart and build you a healthy self-esteem.They are adept at stopping tears dead in their tracks somehow and as if by magic, turn them to fits of laughter .
A couple years ago on Mother's Day, I gave my daughter a little round ceramic pot that said "Mommy Magic" on the front of it. It had a tiny cover and a magnet attached to the back so it could sit on the fridge. Covered in fairy-like aqua sparkle dust, it did indeed look magical.
My small grandson was overjoyed when his mom explained that the "Mommy Magic" pot would stay on the fridge and they would use it only if there was a "Mommy Magic" emergency that she could not pull off herself. He was beside himself at the prospect of the "emergency" pot of magic on the fridge and knowing him, he probably lost sleep over it that night.
My grandson wanted to go to Dunkin Donuts one morning, but my daughter said donuts were not in the budget. After a minute, the light came on for my grandson and he was very excited to suggest she use some mommy magic from the pot to get donuts. Disaster!
My daughter made a good save, though, by saying; a donut was not exactly an emergency and they really should save the mommy magic for something super special and super important. My grandson agreed and that was the end of the conversation.
However, I ended up taking him for a donut that day, so in his eyes, the mommy magic worked, but it was actually "Mimi Magic" and that's another story in and of itself.
A couple weeks before Christmas, my grandson was chatting with my daughter and hashing over gifts he wanted to get for his brother and his dad. Now mind you, this kid gets so excited over everything he literally shakes. He told my daughter (as he shook) that he was getting her "something very, very special and you will love it, Mommy!"
My daughter knew he did not have much money to do Christmas shopping, so she was curious and prodded him into telling her what he had in mind. My grandson ran off, came back with a sale flyer and proudly pointed out the gift he was getting her for Christmas.
My daughter was flattered, but horrified to see her son wanted to get her a $ 140 Delonghi Panini maker. She explained what an exceptional gift that would be, but it was very expensive and how did he think he was going to find the money to buy the Panini maker?
My grandson was not a bit shy to explain he was going to use some "Mommy Magic" from the pot to get her the "awesome" sandwich maker. She gently explained that as much as she would like the Panini maker, in fact dreamed of having one...she would absolutely love a bottle of pretty nail polish even more and in the color of his choice.
My daughter also pointed out that he had enough money for nail polish and they could save the "Mommy Magic" once again, for the ever-looming emergency that she knows will come some day!
