Mommy What's That?

Parents are usually very eager to hear their children utter their first words. It is a joyous and momentous occasion. Fast forward about 2 years and you wish they would have missed that milestone. My son and I were at the grocery store one day. Things were going well, he was being good and we were having a great time. A lady passed by us with an eye patch and that is when things began to go wrong. He said, " Oh look mommy! She's a pirate." He was very excited and yes he did say it loud enough for her to hear. He metioned to me that he thought she was cool and wished he could have an eye patch. I carefully explained to him that her eye was hurt and that was the reason that she had the patch. We finished our shopping and went home.

At the time I was working for my mother-in-law and could bring the kids to work. We show up the next day and I tell her the amusing story of how he met the "pirate." Just about the time I get done telling the story, the woman walks into the shop and out comes my son. He said "Look mommy there's the pirate lady again!" I was so mortified. I wanted to crawl in a hole. She was a good sport and explained to him why she had the patch. I was thankful that she had a good attitude about it.
